Unsupportive GP's
« on: November 06, 2011, 03:20:50 PM »
Has anyone got any experience of an unsupportive GP? Here's my experience. When my mum passed away in a car accident i was down and went to see her to try and get some time off work. She told me death happens get over it!
I have also had time off work again since being diagnosed with depression and when I asked for a sick note she asked me have I even got a job to be sick from? then when I was ready to go back she would say have you even got a job to go back to? id be like well why would i be here? would leave me totally confused. Gladly I changed GP and the new one is so much better. Have any of you had any bad experiences.

Lol

I had an awful GP when I was young. To cut a long story short I had problems with my blood sugar and it was terrifying. Whenever something happened with it I would charge to the doctor and all he would say was 'I would not worry'. He must have said that 50 times! I WAS worried. I couldn't have given a toot whether he would worry or not, what i was going through was VERY worrying to me!! Once I stumbled down to him in the middle of an 'episode' without correcting it so I could show him what I was worried about,.. I burst into the surgery staggering, shaking all over with blue lips, white skin and fainted. SPECTACULAR! When I came round (in their staff room! not even in a treatment room!?!?) he said 'I would not worry'.

I changed surgery and am still with that GP now. He is lovely and really supportive and takes time to listen and understand. SO important to change if you don't gel.

Unfortunately mental disquiet still breeds scepticism and stigma, sometimes amongst GPs too! And as we all know, it is very difficult to understand depression unless you have gone through it yourself. This GP obviously hasn't!!?

One of my local GP's is unfriendly, and actively rude. He seems to have a contempt for depression and anxiety and treats me as if its a fault of my personality. He displays no insight at all, and has a clear lack of knowedge surrounding the condition and the medications. I mentioned this to another GP, and he shook his head in a maaner which suggested it wasnt the fisrt time he had heard such complaints. I think being able to make your patient feel comfortable is part of their job, and they should be kind and reasuring.
