I had an awful GP when I was young. To cut a long story short I had problems with my blood sugar and it was terrifying. Whenever something happened with it I would charge to the doctor and all he would say was 'I would not worry'. He must have said that 50 times! I WAS worried. I couldn't have given a toot whether he would worry or not, what i was going through was VERY worrying to me!! Once I stumbled down to him in the middle of an 'episode' without correcting it so I could show him what I was worried about,.. I burst into the surgery staggering, shaking all over with blue lips, white skin and fainted. SPECTACULAR! When I came round (in their staff room! not even in a treatment room!?!?) he said 'I would not worry'.
I changed surgery and am still with that GP now. He is lovely and really supportive and takes time to listen and understand. SO important to change if you don't gel.
Unfortunately mental disquiet still breeds scepticism and stigma, sometimes amongst GPs too! And as we all know, it is very difficult to understand depression unless you have gone through it yourself. This GP obviously hasn't!!?
