Has anyone else been asked this by the doctor?
« on: October 05, 2011, 11:41:37 AM »
I had my first  visit with the doctor two weeks ago I was really depressed and visably upset. This wasn't my normal doctor it's just who I could see on the day as I really needed AD. Annyyhhooo this doc was not helpful at all I found him rude and not understanding at all. He asked me the normal questions about how I was feeling and then asked about work. I told him that I felt I needed some time off although I felt really guilty about it. He then asked me if I want to be off long term. I was wondering if anyone else had that question put to them. It's been playing on my mind for two weeks now. I was feeling awful anyway and guilty about going off sick. That question made me feel even worse like I was just making it all up to be off. I know people just go off sick longterm so they don't have to work but I would never do that. I know the doc doesn't know that but I just thought it was a bit off to ask that to someone who was clearly distressed.

Am I just making a mountain out of a molehill? I have to go see him again this afternoon and I  so anxious about the visit.

Ive never been asked that,  my doctor immediately put me on sick when I had my breakdown and told me when he thought I was ready to go back,  it almost makes me wonder if its a sort of trick question to see if you're trying to get on the sick unnecessarily.

Try not to worry about it,  just tell him the truth, thats the best thing imo

My gp asks me on my weekly visits, every time I give the same answer
If you think things can't get worse it's probably only because you lack sufficient imagination.

I havent worked since my eldest was 4 (9yrs ago)
I have never asked for a sick line, although I do receive benefits
I am on Income Support and Child Tax Credit
I am now being asked about returning to work and the thought absolutely terrifies me but I dont want to ask the doctor for a sickline
because I think he will no believe I am ill, which I know is just my paranoia but thats how I feel, I need to attend meeting 6monthly to check if they can help me get back to work
but I know I couldnt unless they can find me a job answering a telephone in a wee room where no-one else is about, As I get extremely wary of people around me unless I know them well.
at the moment I am fine as I wont lose my benefit until my wee one turns 7yrs old so got 2yrs and hope by then I am well enough to return to college to retrain or go back to work.
Time and Time again people have told me to claim DLA but I dont want to make money from being ill, the extra cash wont make my illness any easier to live with, and the paper work etc will just stress me out even more.

I hate the procedure in this country infact TBH I hate most of this countries policies at the moment :| xx

Are you scottish kairen? Would they not have to take into account your illness if they are forcing you back to work? It's all very well forcing the scroungers back to work but those that can't work because of illness should be left alone.

I got another two week sick line from the docs today. He was better today and didn't ask if I wanted to be of sick long term. I hope to go back to work after these two weeks. I think the ADs are kicking in now so should manage it.

I am self employed / was self employed but have been on the sick since June when I had a fall which injured my neck ( herniated disc) meaning I , for now just cant manage to do my job which is basically handyman stuff/property renovations etc.

The first month the doc gave me 4 weeks due to this injury but since then every month he gives me a note for anxiety and depression. I am covered until the end of this month for now. he's never suggested going long term although he has hinted that we're looking 6 months on the pills etc.

Once I get to grips with things and can do my job again I hope to get back into things or even if I could somehow work it so i hired someone to do my work but then i'd need to get enough work to support them and me which right now is hard so I dont think about it too much yet.

I have just filled in my esa medical assessment forms....god knows what to expect now, they can try and get me back into work if they like but for now i'm physically and mentally just not ready. jas, esa all the same to me really, &$%+e amount and live weekly on what i earned in a day before so sooner i'm bak working the better.

Hi Angel
Yes I am in Scotland, I would be able to get a sickline I am sure,
but I feel like I am playing the system (if that makes sense) I "feel" they would think I am acting.
So have never asked.
More my own "issues" than the system working against me :( hope that made sense x

Angel I am just down the road in Beith
and I totally get what you mean, with a fracture or skin disorder people can "see" something is wrong
but with mental health it is much harder and you do feel like you need to prove your ill.

My sister has mental health problems too and ended up taking a breakdown in her work, and her friends from work had to call her a cab and send her home and ring my mum to tell her she was on her way home. She is now mortified that it happened in work with people who didnt really know her.
I would defo say dont push yourself it is not worth it xx

I have had problems like this before with doctors angel..... it takes a long time to build trust between you and your doctor so you feel you can open up, ive never once asked for a sick note however ive been receiving them for a year n half now. Just rebook yourself in your doctors and see your normal doctor, explain what happened and im sure he will say what you need to hear, dont beat yourself up bout it :)
