newbie alert
« on: January 09, 2011, 08:00:04 PM »
hi, so i'm new here, my name's niall, i'm 20 years old, currently at university studying music technology. i'll try not to go on for too long here... suffered from depression/dysthymia since i was around 14 years old, had a pretty bad time in school and so far a pretty bad time at university too. in the last three/four years i've also developed a quite severe drinking problem.

i've had various forms of counselling/therapy including CBT, and medication (which i'm really not keen on the idea of), but nothing has changed and it's been so long that it feels it never will. nothing is enjoyable for me anymore. i feel like my life is going nowhere, can't find a job, not all that well endowed with friends, havent been on so much as a date in almost a year, and i'm about as well known as a musician now (my dream is to do the music thing full time, sad i know) as i was when i was seventeen, the only difference is that the rubbish open mic nights i play at are in a different city. i want to believe things will get better, but lately i just can't.

think i've written quite enough.. nice to meet you all, anyhow.

hi niall,  !"£

Sorry to hear you're finding it tough. I don't think it's at all sad to have a dream. Try planning how you will make it real, in tiny stages if necessary, then start moving towards it. (Don't be fooled by the way, I'm great at giving advice, doing it myself naaah  "£$)

best wishes, bel

thanks :)
i'm lucky to still be young, i have plenty of time to figure all that out at least... definitely plenty more years of people asking why i don't play more cheerful stuff now and then... hah. right now i just want to actually enjoy living, even just in some small way. the only time i've ever been happy in my life was with my ex girlfriend and...well it didn't work out quite how i'd have hoped, let's leave it there. no amount of people in the pubs that i play in that actually listen instead of talking over me could replace a feeling like that. seems like a distant memory now.

is there a lot of activity goes on around the forum lately? i noticed a lot of the more recent posts were by new people like myself, and mostly in this section. or maybe i missed something, i don't know. being observant was never really my strong point.

Hi and welcome Niall,

Don't be shy to post, we're all here to chat and hopefully learn a thing or too along the way.

Take care
Mark  :)
