General advice wanted
« on: September 25, 2010, 09:31:13 PM »
Hi folks

I was diagnosed with depression just over a year ago, first 6 months or so weren't too bad, managed to keep working etc. Since April (after going through a change of job and relationship breakdown) I really find it hard to lead any sort of normal existence. Have been signed off work for over 5 months and can't envisage going back, at least not to that job. I don't know the last time I actually showered every day in one week. my flat is rapidly turning into a complete mess because I just have no motivation to do anything at all. I go to bed around 11 o'clock really tired but I don't know the last time I was asleep before around 3am. Which in turn means I'm usually in bed till lunchtime. I tried forcing myself to get up earlier but all it meant was I was exhausted because I wasn't getting enough sleep.

Can anyone who's been there/done that offer any suggestions?

The first time I got depressed I was the same as you, I forced myself to get up early and put up with the exhaustion it became easier as the days went by. Maybe finding something you like to do will kick start you again, for me it was fixing motorcycles that too helped me.

Cheers Junior. Part of the problem is nothing interests me much, find it hard to get as excited about things as I used to

I know its hard but for me it was about keeping my mind busy and fixing engines didnt take much energy, I think keeping your mind busy and sleeping at the right times is key to fighting your way back form depression.

Hi JMS,

I dropped out of college for a year due to depression (long time ago now!) and I did a little bit of voluntary work, just to give me a reason to get washed, dressed etc., and get me out of the house.

I know it's hard, but try to do something nice for yourself every day, even just a little thing.

Hi JMS,

I too was exactly the same as yourself, i was hospitalised but after i came out of hospital i was the same, basically turning night into day, but never really feeling rested, alot of it was the medication i felt, but what helped me was to get better in some ways was to go walking, i got a dog and for me it really helped me because i would have to go walking with her, i only got the dog after i was confident that i could go out. I was really tired all the time but somehow the exercise gave me a little more energy everyday and then after a while i got into a normal routine of sleeping then i felt strong enough and confident enough to go back to work, in my case find a new job because i had not worked for a couple of years. You will get there but the hardest part sometimes is taking the first few steps on that long road to recovery. I still have bad depression but i have learned to cope with things so i can have a semi-normal life!!
Good luck with it!!!

Nice on JMS,
I hope you enjoy it, if not this time then maybe the next time, try not to give up if at first it is not easy. I have learnt this the hard way, sometimes i personally give up too easily, i am having a bit of a wobble at the moment myself but am making myself get out there.
I really do hope it all makes you feel better my friend!!! ;)

Got up at half 9...not 9 but still better than lunchtime! Showered, washed clothes, cooked, did dishes, cleaned the guinea pig cage...didn't get to darts cos my flatmate was busy, but all the same, good effort methinks!

Hi there, I hope you are feeling a little better since your first post. You sound as if you or have been through a tough time, I think it's important that you have support for your depression on a continual basis, and want to seek help. It's never easy when you are depressed to suddenly get up and start cleaning your flat, or try to get motivated in finding a job etc. It's important to find the underlining causes of this as this could be a possibility for your depression, however I say possibility because I don't know your personal situation!

There are certain tools to help you, but it depends on the extent of your depression and other courses. I hope you are feeling much better, if you ever want to chat please don't hesitate in contacting me, either on here or our email.

thanks
