In need of some kind of diagnosis
« on: May 22, 2013, 03:19:41 PM »
I have had mental health problems all my life. But still have not been diagnosed with anything!! I have asked doctors. Am I bipolar? Is it a personality disorder? Because I do believe what I suffer with is more than just depression?? Just ask my poor kids. I look at other people and I wanna be like them. But IM not and I cant be. Infact the more i try the worse I get. I struggle to keep friends/partners etc. But a diagnosis would be helpful, because I struggle to deal with things. Paying bills etc. I can be really bad with money. Cos sometimes when Im bored Ill go spend money I dont really have. Then regret it and be peed off with myself big time!!I been trying to ring round my creditors to get payments lessened. They were helpful but they kept asking me wht my mental health problem is?? I said I don't know. I said severe depression. But I don't think that's what I have. Has anyone got sany helpful advice on how to get a diagnosis. be assesed or something like that?

With regards to your debts it's worth going along to the citizen's advice bureau as they can help.  It will probably be a case of writing letters on your behalf but if it means getting repayments rescheduled so you're paying lower amounts it will help you.

One thought is it's worth you talking to your doctor that it's not helping not having an exact diagnosis.  If it is severe depression then at least you can say that but if he / she think it could be something then yes you will need to be assessed.

Hi Danni. Sorry you don't have a precise diagnosis, that must make life difficult. The bulk of diagnoses are actually made by GP's. They are pretty good if you only suffer from one disorder and your symptoms are classical for a particular disorder. They have been known to struggle with more complex situations. It sounds like your situation might fall into that category.

Greater complexity generally means accessing a psychiatrist. They can be found in various locations. My Community Mental Health Team has one. My Crisis Team has four. Psychiatric out patients has any number but they each cover a particular geographical area. None of them will see you off the street, you need a referral from someone, most often your GP.

In your situation I think I would see my GP and ask if they felt capable of firming up your diagnosis. They may not feel able to do this. In that case they can easily refer you on. I have seen out patient psychiatrists often and CMHT's a couple of times. In terms of diagnosis, both were about equal. If you are thinking about treatment and support afterwards I would say CMHT's have quicker access to a range of services. My team can supply CPN's, Support Workers, OT's, Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselling, and Psychiatry from  their own resources. They don't need to refer on.

Anyway I hope you get somewhere. As an aside, the Citizens Advice Bureau can be amazingly good with money matters.

Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long, strange, trip it's been
