Cheering up needed please!
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:05:58 PM »
Since waking up this morning, I have been brooding!
Please can someone help me see things more positively.
I keep worrying that my depression is going to get worse with age and that I am going to be in a really bad state by the time I am middle aged.
Hubby is telling me I have no evidence of this and by then scientists will have come up with much better treatments.
Still, I am 31 and I am worried it is going to get worse.
I first had depression when I was 17. Since then, I would say thanks to medication and therapy, I am actually coping a LOT better and when I get an episode, and as long as I am put on the correct medication my depression really doesn't last half as long as it used to.
Still, I am brooding and I find it hard to shake it! Please can you cheer me up people?!!!

I also thought that I was never going to be 'me' again. But I have with the help of medication and good counselling. You will get well again, I know how hard it is to think this. I remember asking dr's, family and friends when would I be well. But it did happen, it was gradual but I did and so will you. S x x x x

Thank you Shaz!!!!
I realize the whole "worried about the future" is all part of depression but it's just really hard to shift it!

When I get like that I normally try to busy myself with something that gives me little opportunity to think. The children come in handy for this.

Yes I tried that and it helped!
I made the mistake of googling "does depression get worse with age" and of course the internet is filled with people telling you "oh yes, of course it does!"
Truth is, I know some people who say their depression got better with age. Even my colleague who had ECT 25 years ago says her depression is easier to cope with now and she's not been back to hospital since....

Hey book.... I've never looked into it, but I tend to think/hope that depression does get better with age.  As long as we work at it, find the right meds, with our earthly years, comes wisdom  $%^ There, howz about that then? =+-

I'm 50 and, while I can't (YET) be testament to my own theory, I hope there are enough years left to work on that.

Catb love your way of seeing the world!
I too have been told by my colleague who is in her fifties that it gets better. She had to go to hospital for ECT about 20 odd years ago, since then, she's been on medication but she says her depression is well controlled and not as bad as it used to be + she's not had to go back to hospital.
I am hoping treatments will get better and better too I mean GLYX-13 (sorry I am obsessed with this!) brings lots of hope for the near future!!!
