Physical symptoms of stress / depression
« on: October 08, 2012, 01:12:19 AM »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced heart palpations and chest pain. Sometimes I feel a thump in the middle of my chest that makes me draw breath sharply and quickly. I also had borderline high blood pressure when last tested at a stand at a work.

From research I think these are symptoms of chronic stress but would be good to know if anyone else has had this - I will of course mention to my GP at the next visit but worrying about it is really ramping up my anxiety at now (and as you can see by the time I'm not sleeping at the moment either).

Hi  +-_. I've definitely had the palpitations and chest pain. The thumping in my chest becomes quite overpowering at times, but the pain itself never reaches an overpowering level. I have had to call 999 once, because I felt a pain in my left arm as well, but this proved to be just me being my normal drain on the NHS! My hearing is not good, and when the thumping starts, I can't even hear the tv. And, like you, I find it almost impossible to drop off to sleep, then all of a sudden, It just goes. I was advised to try breathing deeply and slowly in through the mouth, hold, and out through the nose. If I can concentrate on the breathing, it seems to help. I hope that you can  *&* Good luck.

The palpitations etc could be a panic attack but I'd be inclined to speak to your GP xx

I have palpitations with my anxiety and feel like I can't get enough air into my lungs sometimes... Are you on any medication? It could also be a side effect. Xx
This too shall pass.

Munchroom is probably on the money, a lot of anti-depressants of any class can cause heart palpitations. Talk to your GP when you next see him or her but it is quite likely nothing you need to be worried about! If you are a little underweight they will be more common too, sometimes I can actually see my heart beating against my chest as well as feeling it.
