Dygestive system and depression
« on: September 27, 2012, 07:11:21 PM »
Hello. First of all sorry if I made any grammar mistakes as my nationality is Lithuanian and I live in the uk now. So I just wanted to ask if some of you guys struggle with sygestion problems? I have depression and anxiety and don't have appetite. In most occasions I don't eat at all all day long. When I eat I feel bad in my stomach and uncomfortable. So the questio would be did you get any better after taking ADs ? I'm taking citalopram (I started feeling better in mood) but my dygestion is the same.

Hi,

It's very common to have digestive problems along with depression and anxiety. I always have particularly bad digestive problems when I'm struggling emotionally. I've just started Citalopram and had quite bad nausea and some diarhoea at first, but it is getting much better 3 weeks on.

The brain and stomach are linked, if you're interested in exploring this, google "enteric nervous system".

And your grammar is just fine!

I get a big flare up with my IBS when stressed or depressed, it often takes a little while to settle down properly afterwards :(

I really struggle to eat when my anxiety is bad, I can't get the food down past my throat and then that makes me panic and even if it does, my stomach is in knots. I can also go for a while without eating anything even through I feel hungry....

I work night shifts and I tend to be ok on the day before but the day after I really struggle. I don't tend to eat through the night because I'm almost 'buzzing' with anxiety, sometimes I think its what keeps me awake! When I come home in the morning I am too tired to eat even though I am hungry and then when I do eat later on in the day I feel really physically sick. I don't know if this is because my body is suddenly in shock at having food or whether all my anxiety is still there the next day and its as if my body is going 'Woah.... what did we just do?! How can we cope with that??:-\

This too shall pass.

I also struggle with eating when my anxiety is bad. Just swallowing is difficult. Since suffering with depression I have developed IBS as well. S x x x x
