Any ideas on computer problem
« on: August 28, 2012, 05:16:42 PM »
I'm working with a lap top (loaned by a friend).  There's a problem whenever I'm typing on the Forum or email and even sometimes on Word document; whenever I'm typing, the cursor seems to jump from half way through the sentence I'm typing onto one of the sentences I've previously typed.  I've also noticed everything is very slow to start up and shut down.  The thing is, I need to give this lap top back this week, so need to find out what's wrong... I feel terrible if I can't fix it.

What I've done so far... re-installed the keyboard software, ran a diagnostic check which seems to be okay, even the keyboard report says it's working okay

Any suggestions....?   _-+ ()(

I'm not an expert, but would a disc defragment for the C drive help with the slowness?

I have had a similar problem with laptop mice - however, this was caused by my hand brushing against the mousepad and moving the cursor. But I don't think that is your problem?

Good luck!

D'ya know Paula, you might just be right about the hand brushing mousepad.  Sometimes the cursor clicks onto things without me touching it.  As I type this, I'm careful not to touch mousepad and it seems to be typing okay.... haha... what a donut.  I suppose the problem then lies with the mouse, clicking without me touching it.

What you say about disc defragment... I know how to do that, but was worried in case it wipes files.  Is it just a programme that tidies things up?  I might try that

Many thanks for clicking my brain into gear!

No probs Cat!  ;)

A C drive disc defrag should not wipe any files, it just consolidates the content. Which is how I understand it!

The laptop might need a virus scan - it could be viruses that it's picked up, slowing it down?

I use a wireless mouse with my laptop as I'm too impatient to use the mousepad  "!+

my disc is still defragmenting after 2hrs... must've been in a mess.  ()( Thankfully I can still use the comp and no more mouse issues since I reset and kept my wrists away from the mousepad... problem solved  $%$

Yer pip and zaf, I would but the mouse doesn't fit this lap top.  I'm handing it back soon anyway, otherwise I might even plug a separate keyboard cause I've never liked laptop boards.

In that case the defrag will help speed up the laptop.  I've been using laptops for about 7 years now but I must admit I still like using our pc as well.
