Summer SAD
« on: August 17, 2012, 10:03:25 AM »
I just joined Depression Alliance recently and they sent me their monthly publication called Single Step. In it is and atricle about understanding Summer SAD. Some people suffer more in the summer than they do the winter, this is due to more light, higher temps, feeling uncomfortable in the heat, increased noise due to people being outdoors more or having parties, lawnmowers going off all the time, more noise as having to have windows open, lack of or uncomfortable sleep due to warmer nights. Intrestingly I think I suffered from this myself last summer. It was awful.

Here is a quote from the article "It is no coincidence either that the effects of heat can be similar to depression: lack of motivation, lack of energy, more sitting around and a greater tendency towards sleep problems. Summer SAD may also simply be an extreme variation of the body's normal response to heat"

Does anyone here suffer with this?

I could relate to the article Shaz, often have felt uncomfortable in the heat and not wanted to go out. Plus increased noise stresses me out too

I think I have done in the past but put it down to me retreating indoors and not getting as much sunlight as I should.  I get winter SAD much worse though

I think winter SAD is much more common but from what I read people with summer SAD dread the summer and feel relieved when the clocks turn back

The weather does affect my moods, I'm ok in the winter if it's sunny. In the summer I can get a touch high but low if it's wet and rainy.

This 'Summer SAD' does somehow make sense to me.
I have felt very low this summer, but this could just also be that this year's summer happens to be when I started feeling depressed and anxious.
But I do miss winter - sounds strange, I know. I guess so many people make plans over the summer, and go away, that I can feel a bit 'left behind' or 'left out'. People's calendars fill up weeks or months in advance during the summer, whereas friends of mine are more available to get together informally in the winter months.
I feel like I don't have a big circle of friends, so when summer comes, many of them go away/ have plans...

I think the article was saying people suffer as a result of the heat, makes the irritable, stressed and they cant sleep well at night due to heat or humidity. Also some people are sensitive to the brighter light and longer hours of sunshine. Also the increase in noise due to sunny weather can cause stress too.

I can definitely relate to Summer SAD.  I don't like summer and haven't done for a long time now.  Once summer "starts" I can't wait for Autumn/winter again.  I don't like the heat and the fact that more people are out and about.  In winter I can "hide" behind a big winter coat and there is more excuse to stay inside in the security of my home.

Roll on winter ...
