Benefit cuts for under 25s
« on: June 24, 2012, 04:10:38 PM »
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2163773/David-Cameron-axe-housing-benefits-feckless-25s-declares-war-welfare-culture.html

This is quite horrific, although sensationalised by the DM (as always!).  People can still get Housing Benefit if they work but are on low incomes so why should it matter what age you are?  Cameron doesn't live in the real world; he has known nothing but privilege, the best education money can buy and a seething contempt for people not so fortunate.  It worries me because what will he turn his angst against next?   For example he could decide that people with mental illnesses aren't worth the money the NHS spends on treatment.  What also bothers me is he tries to disguise his contempt for normal people with this façade that he is 'one of us'.  He is not and never will be.

Not nice either to stereotype under 25s as feckless; can't you be feckless at any age?  It also doesn't take into account the cost of living and how hard it is to get together the deposit for a house/flat let alone a mortgage.  Then the fact that most jobs pay peanuts that you can't afford to support yourself on without welfare.  No wonder people are getting ill, most people are decent and just want a quite life, yet this government seems intent on destroying the very fabric that underlines society.

I once said I would never vote Labour, but I would seriously consider it now.  I voted UKIP last time but now I see it as a wasted vote and when Nigel Farage appears on the Alex Jones show, well...(if you don't know Alex Jones, google him he is a rabid conspiracy theorist with a radio show in Texas, but wear earplugs!).

That's true, Zaf.  But when they want our vote....well they know exactly how we feel and the empathy pours from them, etc.

am totally with you on this Beet, he talks utter crap about 'Britain rolling up its sleeves'. What the hell does that mean exactly and who thought up that catchphrase? Does it mean there are going to another 500,000 jobs created in the next 6 months? Does it hell! The man talks rubbish. Anyways, love your avatar, Carl Sagan was always someone who inspired me

Exactly, Alex.  He is too quick to put people into simple categories when infact everyone has their own story, experiences and bad luck so it is unfair to just brand someone as feckless because of their age, say.  From my own experiences I suffer with depression and find it extremely hard to work with other people, but I am not feckless and want to contribute but I am just unlucky.  I have worked since I was 18 (I'm now 34) in some horrific jobs and I can't go back to something that will obviously make me ill.  I am fed up with putting on a brave face and being steamrolled to think what I am expected to think, only to end up suicidal.  Anyway that is just my story.

When you read the comments on this article you might be mistaken in thinking that certain readers are beyond perfect; they work 80 hours a week for 50 years, are never ill, never have any misfortune and seem to think anyone who dares take something from the State are pure scroungers.

I wonder how long it would take for Cameron et al to have a breakdown and get prescribed citalopram if they had to live on the minimum wage in a house that is falling apart.

Alex, you are spot on the money; where are the jobs and why do we always have to except just ok as a way of life?  We live in one of the most technologically advanced, richest, most privileged places on Earth!!!!!

I dont read the comments anymore or in fact the Daily Mail website as both rile me up. People like you say, they know it all! Well actually they dont and they know very little from the simple fact they tarnish everyone with the same brush without getting the facts first! They totally buy into Cameron and his rhetoric. Like you say its one thing getting people off benefits but where are the jobs to get those people off benefits? I have been called a sponger myself directly yet I have tried looking for work, doing courses to help improve my chances and even doing volunteer work

have noticed the press and tv news always focus on showing benefit cheats and yob layabouts in reports on benefits but never see reports on ppl that really need benefits and do interviews or reports. ian duncan smith is the worse mp for targeting the ill as he real hates anyone on benefits no matter why they are on them.
everytime a new govenment gets in they always plan way ahead even into a next term then think well if they dont get in this wont happen n there plans will go howeva seems whoeva gets in after etc just continues what was started no matter if labour get in next or not. insteda of helping ppl that are working get better wages and more help they punish the poor and make it harder n harder so ppl working even if there life with money not great know that on benefits life is pants n no one can live off them etc, but where do ppl that really cant work and are truly ill and have been for many years fit in if benefits are cut and cut life continues to be a struggle and no doubt will forever be.
