We seem to gradually be understanding more whete science is concerned, but perhaps at the same time forgetting things that the ancient people knew.

If you think its like being under GA, do think you wake up afterwards at any time?

Thats a difficult one as sometimes new knowledge replaces previously held beliefs

Wow ! My depressed brain has no way of even beginning to think in this way. I am restricted to negative thoughts only.   >:(

Zaf, I was under a GA last march and all I remember beforehand was the doctor saying 'breath this and count to 10'.  Next thing I know I am being wheeled to the recovery ward.  It was unlike sleep in the fact that I knew nothing, there was no darkness, no light, no dreams, not anything.  Ok my brain was still active but if that is what death is like then I'm not concerned.  Richard Dawkins says that he isn't scared of death, but he is of dying.  Death would involve the ceasing of electrical activity in the brain, but scientists say we may not be truly dead until this occurs:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information-theoretic_death

Then there is the many worlds interpretation that means we always avoid death.

I don't think we would wake up is death is like a GA because by then are body would not be in the state it was prior to death.

Sorry, I've just realised how morose my previous post sounds.  The subject being on my mind a lot lately can be my only mitigation.

I feel overwhelmed all the time but I'm at my worst when come crashing down from a period of feeling quite stable. I feel things I used to be able to do are just so much harder, and this has a negative effect on how I feel about not being able to do more :(

I know what you mean about being given a GA, I have the experience.  I can understand not being frightened of death but being frightened of dying, that process can certainly be very unpleasant physically if not mentally.

I hope when its my time to go I dont feel I have any responsibilities to stay around for (my mum and animals) as there are times when I'd rather welcome either experiencing the white light and tunnel etc or just dozing off into the warm blackness of death (if thats what happens of course)

For me, having a child who has a disability and one who is very vulnerable has made death a lot more scary.
