At the moment they are refusing almost everyone, this was from people at the CAB, but if they do make sure you appeal the decision as a lot are winning the appeals as these are done by independent tribunal.
I have been on incapacity benefit for ages and was turned down for ESA, waiting for my appeal date as we speak.
As mentioned it can take months but it is backdated to when you first applied.
I also got the papers from my original interview and because I was coherent and not a gibbering wreck I was fit for work.
I honestly believe they will push someone over the edge with their callous behaviour.

I was told by my doctor to apply for benefits. I've just filled in the ESA online form. But i'll need to wait until my p45 comes through before I can send it.
From the form itself, you can tell it's more directed to people with physical disabilities. I'm a bit lost when it comes to claiming benefits. Not a clue what I may be entitled to!

The CAB might be able to help

Yeah, I think I'll probably need to ask their advice at some point. I've heard it's common to be rejected at first but about 40% of people who appeal, win!
Just shows how ridiculous the ESA assessments are!
