New member looking to meet similar people
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:24:35 PM »
Hello everyone,
Im a 25 year old guy from the south east, for years I have had low points where it has been hard to pick myself up from, only recently have I stopped ignoring it and finally done something by going to the doctors and being referred to counselling/CBT and I have also been perscribed fleuxetine 20mg which on the 7th day of taking I feel a bit better, things don't seem quite an effort anymore although i am experience side effects like blurred vision at times.
Just wondering if anyone else has been on this medication and what their outcome was  :)

Hi and welcome Daryl, I have been on prozac in the past, they worked well for several depressive episodes with no obvious side effects

I've been on fluoxantine now for 3 weeks and only just beginning to feel better for the last few days.  I have had side effects, well I believe they are anyway; waking at night and restless sleep, drowsiness during the day; hot flushes; further depression and headaches. Although at the moment I am just left with the sleep problems. I always feel so tired and although I feel better the tiredness makes doing anything (like completing job applications) very difficult. Keep going though and see how the first 6 weeks go.

hi Ohdaddy, yes i wake in the night sometimes and so far the tablets made me feel a little better i don't feel so guilty about my past mistakes and although i am still fragile i am looking forward to getting help.
i take it ur looking for work then? i have been also but due to my problems am quite limited as to what i can go for as i get anxious and can't handle stressful roles very well. I do temp work with agencies from time to time but thats usually fairly easy.  are u having any therapy as well ohdaddy?

I used to get terrible night waking, it did ease but took some time.

I would love to work but like you struggle to cope with a full time job, I'm not working at all at the moment. I did receive cbt for a while and it did help. Unfortunately I had to stop the fluoxetine.

Hi and welcome Daryl.

As for meds, citalopram made me paranoid, seroxat made me suicidal and mirtazapine made me fat. But I have reactive depression and my (very honest) GP has told me that no meds will fix it

Hi DarlR

No therapy yet. I think the prozac gives you a short term lift, a sticking plaster if you like and the therapy provides you with some mental tools to cope without medication in the future.

I am a teacher on a short term contract. It was not renewed as I was "looking tired and stressed" and finding it difficult to cope. Don't go into teaching.

I had to stop taking fluoxitine as I'm bipolar and was having a depressive episode, the problem is that ssri antidepressants flip you into a manic episode if you take them for too long. Fluoxetine does work well once it gets going, it's just getting through the side effects.

I hope things settle down for you soon.

Ohdaddy, I second the don't go into teaching warning, I have the battle scars  ;)
