mornings are the worst
« on: April 07, 2012, 07:17:16 AM »
I dont know about you but I find mornings dreadful. I feel ok at night, I usually relax by then. In the mornings I feel so dreadful I shake first thing when I wake up. I dont know if its the meds I am on but it really feels bad. As I say usually by the night time my mood improves somewhat and I start to relax more. Its a classic symptom of depression I know.

As you say, I think it's quite normal, my Psychiatrist calls it diurnal variation.

I mostly experience it like this, although I do have days when I feel worse in the evening.

When I was at my worst I would wake and shake from head to foot and by the end of the day I would be like a different person.  Seems to be part of this horrible illness.

Sounds like a pattern based behaviour type thing. Try to think if you've got any memories of things going badly in the morning. Or maybe you've been low in mornings and your subconscious is repeating this whether you're bad or not.

I dont find I cycle on days per-se, more on Months, so between March and June, my depression is worst especially in the mornings. I've started working on NLP to try and understand why this is but also (and most importantly) to break that pattern of behaviour.
What the practitioner I see has done is identify some 'triggers' for my low mood (and in some cases that can be as simple as 'the sun is out this morning'), we then work out 5 phases between that happening and me feeling bad.
He then swaps those feelings round so I get confused, now when I get the trigger, my reactions are altered, so the pattern is broken, and most of the time (I say this because it's not a magic fix and will take some practise from me too) I fall into the newly programmed behaviour.

As people say in this thread, it's a classic symptom, but this technique has helped me, might be good for others too?

ac91272, I have only ever had this twice in my life and both times was after the break up of my relationships and subsequent pain. I never had a problem with mornings except maybe getting up in the morning. Now I am awake at 4-5am and if I am lucky 6.30am. Its horrible

I'm usually a morning person and I can judge how bad my depression is depending how I feel first thing in the morning

I think we all agree here that mornings can be dreadful when your depressed. I always wondered what people were talking about when they said this as it was something I never experienced myself when depressed. NOW I KNOW!

I'm not really a morning person, I always feel really grotty when I wake up and if the sun isn't out and its a weekend I won't bother getting up until near lunchtime.

I havent slept in late for years but I used to feel grotty in a morning, but not shaking and feeling completely anxious and empty. Now I would be lucky if I slept in till 7am. Its great if you have to get up early for work but no work and that leaves the prospect of an empty day ahead which is scary in itself

Disturbed sleep patterns are one of the worst things about depression at times :(

I agree mornings can be horrific, especially on a work day.  However since I have been on mirtazapine my sleep has been the best in years, helped by not drinking anymore as well.  I am waking up refreshed and suffer no fatigue during the day.  Has anyone tried olanzapine for sleep?  I was on that for years, it never lost its potency but my pdoc took me off it due to it's serious side effects.  I can't sleep well if I am completely sober of any meds or alcohol as my mind simply doesn't switch off.

when I was at my worst, I found mornings almost unbearable.......... it's the thought of having to face another day.

I still tend to check how I am first thing
