Doing stuff
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:14:10 AM »
Hi,

Just wanted to get some ideas really, I have been told time and time again one of the best things you can do is keep yourself busy so as not to become a prisoner in your own head through just sitting around thinking all the time.

So what do you do or suggest that is free/cheap to do that would be productive and positive? All ideas welcome no matter how great or small.  :)

It will depend how you feel about going out and being with people - some sort of voluntary work might help, getting out for walks perhaps if you dont want to mix with people.

Have you any hobbies you like?

when im depressed i struggle with reading or watching tv as mind just wont shut off. I found going to the local pet store to look at animals helped also going for walks taking my camera as when its not busy out and kids are at school being out near nature and taking photos keeps me occupied.

I'm doing a fair bit of gardening at the moment........ I think sunshine is supposed to help (vitamin D and all that). Before that I was decorating (but that costs money, and if you're not feeling up to much it can seem like a huge task).

I try and do the crossword/sudoku in the paper on the weekends, but if I'm feeling twitchy to start with, it sometimes makes me worse (I'm pretty rubbish at sudoku).

Getting outside, even when you don't want to, is beneficial I find.

Otherwise anything that has an end product, I cook and make cards. They require as little or as much imagination as you want ( in both you can follow recipes - or copy a card).

I find anything creative helps... Drawing especially. Gardening and baking are good when I can get the energy and I've recently started running again which takes a lot of effort but I'm determined to keep it up!
This too shall pass.

Getting exercise really helps me, it just takes a great deal of effort to get out there in the first place.

I've been asked to go out more, just for a short while, i find it best if i go between my medication highs like when i feel level so that's morning taking daughter to school and afternoon picking her up either side of that i don't tend to go out weekdays much, unless i visit mt friend at a local second hand shop just before i pick up my daughter.

May contact your local MIND centre they often do things like this.  Or they may have information of organisations that may do.
