Hi, anyone with atypical depression?
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:22:43 AM »
Hi, I'm a new member. Was just wanting some advice on atypical depression. ( feel lethargic can never get enough sleep no motivation everything I do is forced and unenjoyable) I have been on 20mg of fluoxetine (prozac) for 6 weeks, no good. Now Ive been on 20mg of citalopram for 5 weeks but still don't feel any relief. I've read that atypical depression is hard to treat so wondered what med's other people are on and wat works for them ? Thanks. ( I am a female with 2 young children and a husband that world all day.)

Welcome to the forum.   I had to try several different anti-depressants and my dr referring me to mental health team before I got the right medication.  Not all meds work for people.  I believe that medication along with good councelling works (for me anyway).  Have you tried any therapy?

Hi, I'm am on the waiting list for therapy so hopefully will get an appointment soon. I am not sure what to do next either stay on citalopram for a bit longer or to try another ssri or something different. Thanks for your reply

Thanks kate. I suppose were one of the lucky ones, some people can't get any therapy in their area at all so suppose I should be grateful. Hope you get sorted too.

Hope it gets sorted for you.  I was on fluoxetine for 8 weeks before I started to feel the benefits then they upped it to 40 mg.  Don't know about Citalopram, A friend took it and it didn't do much until 40 mg, but we're all different.

Great to hear you're on the waiting list, hope you get an appointment soon  :)

Hi buttercup, thanks for your reply. Yes I feel that 20mg is not enough for me but my doctor wants to wait til easter which feels like forever when your feeling like this. When I swapped my meds over I felt good for a 3 day period and I think it was because I still had prozac in my system, now I'm back to where I started which is torment after tasting what a "normal" life feels like. Anyway hopefully will get there in the end.

Hi and welcome, 20 mg of cilatropram doesnt even start to help me, 40mg works but takes a while to kick in.

Just 'normal' depression - I had two types of ADs that didnt work for me then Prozac that worked for several years but for some reaon lost its effectiveness, the citralopram so far seems to be the most effective, my GP said its usual to start on a lower dose then increase it as starting on a high dose can cause nausea.
