Office work
« on: December 22, 2011, 06:11:58 PM »
I have always had an aversion to working in an office environment because I see it as a lifeless and therefore terrifying way to live. Sat in a room on your own staring at a computer screen all day with nothing but the droning sound that it makes. I can't stand the thought of it.
I've been a cleaner at a hospital for so long but now got to the stage where i feel like everytime i am work i am going to breakdown... so im going to quit and i actually managed to get an interview for an insurance company (hurrah). The thing is, i just cant get excited about insurance and cant see how this will make my mood any better. The job is obviously likely to make me stressed and I dont think I can handle that. Also they want me to work a weekend day every week and one shift a week til 9:30pm. It just sounds like my idea of hell.
Anyone out there work in an office and can share their experiences? Good or bad

I've worked in lots of offices, some fantastic and some living hell, in my experience its not always the work you are doing that makes the job what it is but the people you work with/for.  Some office jobs you can be on your own but others you can be in a huge open plan office with dozens of people, is the insurance job a call centre with those sort of hours?

I don't think i'd say call centre. It's customer service. So i'll be receiving calls and helping people. I will receive full training so i'm guessing i will get to actually use my brain which is good. What office work have you done?

I worked in an office in my late teens and enjoyed every second of it! Pushed paper, filed, entered data, made tea and coffee, I loved it for all the people and office banter. Also I love doing things right for people so if some one gave me a task I loved completing it to a very high standard (of filing or somthing  ::)) and giving it back to them better than they had time to do themselves. It was totally brainless which I loved so you prob wouldn't enjoy that because you want to use your brain, all I wanted was pocket money and a big ham salad baguette at lunch time  ;D

I've done a number of office jobs - including working in an insurance brokers and I can honestly say that none of them (but one, and that was a summer 'temp' job) had a positive impact in my life. I've also done childcare/nannying, painting and decorating and care work and those are the ones I've really excelled in because I am physically working as well as using my brain.
This too shall pass.

I worked in a small theatrical agent's office which could be very hectic but great fun even though I was on my own a lot of the time, I worked for the RLSS which was at times very boring even though the people I worked with were nice, I worked as a civil servant on a RAF camp which I loved as all the blokes there were fantastic fun and the job was interesting, when our department was privatised I transferred to the MoD which I absolutely hated for a variety of reasons, I worked for an accountant and hated it because the people were snooty, I worked for a wholesale greetings card company which was desperately frustrating as the boss would pretend not to be there 9 times out of 10 so he could avoid speaking to people then the people would have a go at me which was the reason I left the job after struggling with the frustration of it for a year or two, I worked at a theatre for the boss which was manic but enjoyable sadly that was only temporary, oh nearly forgot I worked as a school secretary which was great fun and very satisfying but it was only 15 hours a week and term time and I needed a bigger wage at the time.

Blimey, I didnt realise I'd had so many jobs  :o
