We were made for joy and woe
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:25:35 AM »
My name is Clare. I joined this forum many years ago, when I had difficulty coping with the problems in my relationship then. I have not been clinically diagnosed with depression, and at that point in time, I felt like my troubles were so trivial compared with others on the site. Nevertheless, I was thankful for the support that I received from other members in my previous posting about my struggles.

I started going to church last year, and have experienced tremendous healing in my heart, with God's grace. I read this poem by William Blake lately and felt that it blessed me:

Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine,
Under every grief and pine,
Runs a joy with silken twine.
It is right it should be so,
We were made for joy and woe,
And when this we rightly know,
Through the world we safely go.

Essentially, it suggests that it is human to experience both joy and woe. When you are overwhelmed with pain or suffering, know that it is perfectly normal and ok, and that you are not alone. I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

It's been some time since I read that poem.  What church are you going to now?
