Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner as dictated by the pet.

I want to share with you something from Paul Harvey.  It is entitled - Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner as dictated by the pet.

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments. But I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.

10. On the difficult journey, on the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone.  Everything is easier for me if you are there. Because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful thing without God's critters.

Hi Pip

I am new here, I have introduced myself in the New Members area, and I am having a look around to see what else is in these forums.

I came across your post and it really made me smile; made me get a bit emotional too! I lost my partner earlier this year and, although I have family and friends, our little dog is the only "person" I feel really comfortable with these days so this really hit home.

Thanks for making me smile.

JC

It's good you have a dog as pets do give us a reason to live.  What breed is your dog?

I've got a 10 year old Rottweiler called Chyna, an 11 year old lurcher / border collie cross that looks more like a whippet cross called Bruno plus two budgies and a 5 year old cat called Tasha aka Twizel aka Psycho

Very true, she gives me a reason to get out of bed every day. Mostly because she jumps on my head to let me know it is time to go out  ;D

She is a nine year old Sprocker Spaniel (Cocker/Springer cross, but you probably knew that). Strange coincidence but my dog is called Cheenan and my late dad's dog, who now lives with my brother, is lurcher that looks like a large whippet/small greyhound; his name is Ely.

Don't have a cat, although I do love them. When Alan and I lived in our previous house one moved in with us, just turned up one day and decide he would live there! That's the difference between dogs and cats; dogs have "owners", cats have staff  ;D
