Title: How to stop self harm?
Post by: doublep on December 02, 2011, 09:27:48 AM
Hi guys,

How do I stop self harming?... I havent really looked into ways of stopping, but was curious if anybody has any ideas or techniques on stopping this activity?

After last night, I really need to try and curb this before I do some serious damage.

Paul.

a friend of mine who used to self harm badly sometimes found that holding some ice on the inside of her forearm helped

the few things ive been told to try are the ice, rubber band snapping on your wrist, a hot drink and the spoon on the back of your hand, ffew others i cant think of though, but in the end they have just told me to be safe and keep the wounds clean

But arn't those avoidance measures still a form of self harm?

I'd rather do that if it works, than cutting chunks out my arm anymore  :-\

In a way I suppose they are but preferable to cutting or burning as long as they dont lead to more severe SI in time

Rubber band seemed to work for a while last night, it was snapping into a healing wound, so did the job.

Then I got bored of that, and just cut my arm instead.

Fail.

its the same for me, avoidance only seems like a delay to cutting

you could also try this, it work for me for a matter of minuets  ::) http://www.fataltotheflesh.com/ (http://www.fataltotheflesh.com/)

keep fighting, i know its hard, i do it far more than is health, well not at all is healthy but you know what i mean.  in the meantime you should learn basic first aid, or more than basic, depending on what your doing,

Well.. other than keeping busy, or being with someone.. nothing else works.

Don't seem to able to get through a night alone at home without doing something.

Dr didnt seem too arsed when I told him tho.

i think were in similar situations.  but being busy for me means working and that involves a lot of items i can si with but i can just about keep control most of the time.

if im home alone its the first thing that comes to mind

mine cpn was the only person who seemed concerned by some of mine

i think the main thing is learn first aid keep safe and keep the wounds clean and use sterile and clean cutting instruments

Luckily at work I can't do anything, well I could on site but I'd be wearing that much ppe and bubble wrap it would be hard to.

Soon as I get home I think the same!

Been first aid trained, so I'm doing it safely.. just wish I didn't resort to it.

I see. Is there some sort of other motivational gain that you can believe in to help you to stop?

Not sure to be honest.
Xmas was a weird time for me, because my mum and uncle know about it.
everyone has just accepted it, so if I feel the need to do it, I will

What I need to do, is elsewhere. So my arm can fully heal, and get my tattoo to cover it

anywhere fleshy or muscly. that way it keeps something between cuts and veins / arteries.   where ever you decide to do it, you need to learn about that area of your body, well i do that because im need to know everything, just play safe my friend, i dont really want to talk about at too much at the moment after what ive been doing to my self recently.

I struggle for many years with self harming as it was the only way I knew how to release emotional pain/  Things that helped me to stop were throwing darts at a dart board, smashing crockery that I was going to get rid off anyway and chuckingpillows or cushions.

smashing the **** out of things is a huge help to me.

shooting used to help a lot too, only targets never furies but i dont feel like i can trust my self to do that anymore

I used to be violent so I suppose that helped.

I'm hopefully starting weight lifting soon, god a good school friend who goes, scared to go on my own just yet. Will get into it tho.

Weight lifting is a good way to deal with this as you are channeling your agession into lifting.

Telling him everything may be the best thing you could have done. Well done for doing this. He might be able to keep giving you that push you need. Weight lifting is an excellent idea. I hope you find some relief in this. I use resistance training and it works very very well for my pent up agression and frustration. I also did karate but have had to stop this for a while as I would be a danger to myself and others at present. I miss it very much though, it's very good for focus and channeling, the kaia in karate is VERY relieving and if you need to get somthing out, boy does everyone know about it.

Just gotta wait till he's free on nights again as his working patterns have changed.

Once I get started at a gym, I'll be fine, its just the first couple of times till I get used to going.  Hate going to things on my own.

Have you got a door bar? using your own body weight against itself is good. If not press ups and sit ups can be temporarily relieving.

They're not too expensive but they will cause mild damage to your door frame and surrounding wall depending on how you use it. All stuff yuo can correct though, just warn the missus or you'll be in trouble!  ;)
