Hello

It's a pleasure to meet you all. My name is John.

Never before in my life have I ever suffered with a mental illness. My mind was always my fortress which no siege could break -- how so very wrong I was. Until very recently, I was always happy, but then for no reason whatsoever, I just felt incredibly despondent, as if I had lost the will to live. Accompanying this despondency were (moderate) headaches; and the more I worried about the headaches -- despite supposedly to be a symptom of depression -- the worse the despondency grew. The past three days have been the worst -- nothing would make me smile, the headaches were not cured by paracetamol and I had lost my appetite completely replaced by a mild sensation of nausea. So instead of remaining isolated, I sought help from like-minded people.

Welcome along, John and thank you for introducing yourself to us all.

Have you been to your doc about how you're feeling, both mentally and physically?  If not, I'd say definitely make an appointment.  For the nausea, have you tried ginger to ease it?  I swear by it!  I drink ginger beer or ginger ale that has ginger as the first or second ingredient and swear by crystalised ginger too.

Haven't got a clue about the headaches 'cos paracetamol usually works for me.

Maybe keep a mood diary for a week or so to take with you to your doc?  If the doc prescribes meds then they take about 6 weeks before they start kicking in and some people get side effects before they get the benefit, but it's worth sticking with the meds if you can 'cos they really can help how you feel.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I've not been to the doctors, as my despondency comes and goes in cycles. Today is a good day, and it may not return for weeks, or months, but it always returns. I've never had suicidal thoughts, thankfully, and don't believe I will either; but I felt talking with other people suffering similarly might help.

Does your mood change with the darker nights (SAD) or do you almost polar opposites with your mood changes (manic depression) or anything like that?  It's definitely worth having a word with your doc about it 'cos they are medically qualified and we're not   ;)

Feel free to have a read through previous forum posts and maybe, when you feel ready, ask for support when you need it and give support when you feel able to?  Talking to fellow suffers definitely helps but we can't give medical advice.

Maybe ask to have your vitamin D tested during the low patches in case it's that that's causing your despondency?  Maybe try drinking coconut milk to help too?  You need to drink a lot of it to get even the slightest lift, but I've found it to be a natural anti-depressant for sudden dips in mood.  You might also want to try Bounty bars and coconut flakes and things like that?

Hi John,

There are all sorts of reasons why you are feeling the way you do so this is a good place to start exploring and asking questions.
