Fluoxetine or Citalopram or something else?
« on: October 09, 2012, 09:37:20 PM »
Hi All, I hope your all well today.

I get S.A.D every year.  I have had a few relatively successful attempts at relieving it with AD's.
First I tried Fluoxetine 20mg but it sent me a bit nuts with vivid, violent dreams (complete with physical movements).
For the following few years I tried Citalopram which is ok but not quite as good as Fluoxetine.
I have started back on Fluoxetine 10mg in the hope it wont give me the vivid dreams.

Does anyone have any experience of SAD? does anyone have a recommendation for another AD I can try out to get a better result than Citalopram or Fluoxetine? should I look away from SSRI's and go towards NDRI's or SNRI's?

Thanks for taking the time and look after yourselves.

I suffer from SAD, but as I'm on a low dose of ABs for life I just increase my dose in the winter months, I'm also planning to take Vit D this year too as it can apparently help.

Ive used Prozac in the past with no side effects but it stopped working, I'm on Citralopram now and, again, no side effects

ps I use a daylight clock which helps me a fair bit :)

I suffer with it but don't actually take anything to ease it.

All AD's work differently on each individual.  I was on Citalopram for years, no side effects, but it didn't really help much either.  It's difficult to judge whether an AD is ''working''.  You might still feel low when taking one but maybe you would be in despair without it.

I currently use Mirtazapine, as do many people on this Forum.  You need to take this at night because it does make people feel very sleepy.  However, having a good sleep is part of its success because it helps immensely if we're resting enough.

I think Zaf's approach to SAD is good.

Good luck
