Hello all
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:29:28 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just saying hi, and here's my story..

I've gone through the past 5 or so years (since 15/16 ish) with a couple of down days now and again- I just thought was a normal part of life, but maybe not?!

Anyway, before xmas I had an awful couple of weeks and my head just ended up exploding and I just broke down. I lost interest in everything (including tv and food- 2 massive things in my life!!) The xmas holidays were up and down and now I am in my final semester of my final year at uni studying tv production.

I went to the docs almost 2 weeks ago now and he put me on 10mg of citalopram and I'm going back to see him next week. The first week of being on the citalopram I felt awful. I didn't sleep, had constant headaches and felt sick. Still not sleeping very well, and my appetite isn't back to normal but I'm feeling a bit better in myself atm.

When I had my awful patch before xmas my friend was amazing! She supported me, but didn't.. pity? me and let me just spend time with her in her room, whilst she worked/ watched tv or whatever. I found the company a support and it helped me fall asleep, although my friend wasn't too happy with me sleeping in her bed   :-[

So that's me..

Welcome to the forum.

Its good to hear you have a supportive friend, it makes all the difference.

Citalopram can take a month to work, so it may be some time before you see any considerable difference and its also worth mentioning that 10mg is a fairly low dose - they may want to up it at some point

I think the doc wanted to start me on a lower dose and then up it once my body had got used to it. When he does up it, will the side effects all occur again?

I wasn't too keen on going to the doctor, I didn't want to be labelled, and I didn't want to be drugged up. But, I'm in my final year of uni, I have a lot of work and I don't have the time to be ill.

This is a problem with depression. People see the stigma that goes with taking pills and it puts them off.

Depression can be down to a chemical imbalance and the medication can balance that out. I suffer from Crohns disease as well and I need to take steroids to keep it in check. This is easy for everyone to understand as it makes me 'visually' better. Depression seems to be seen as just being miserable or 'mentally ill' which makes people uneasy about taking medication to combat it.

It can make a real difference though.

Citalopram side effects may return when you up the dose, but they should be less intrusive as your body will be more used to it.

If you ever need to ask questions about the medication or just talk about how you feel, then feel free on here. We wont judge you and many people here can relate to what you may say.
