fluctuations in mood
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:46:57 PM »
Is it normal with depression to have fluctuations in your mood in one day? when im feeling down i just dont feel myself . Im almost at a standstill, dont want to do anything. i just dont get how im feeling. kinda get fed up with people at work asking how i am. i lie alot i cant be asked to say the same things, like i feel crap and just want to stay in bed all day.  also my mum keeps thinking its time to take time off work, i cant just give in that easily this is ongoing day in day out. as long as i show my face at work thats good enough for me. although it can take alot of strength in making the effort. ok gone on abit here but my main question was can u feel kinda ok in the morning and by afternoon, feel really low? i kind of dont understand why this happens.

I have always felt much worse in the morning and then by the afternoon felt like a different person. I think many of us here have similar problems. So you are not alone.

Well, fluctuations in mood happen to me in a similar way. I can be up and down several times in one day. I haven't noticed a pattern to it but to be honest I haven't been looking for one.

Like you I don't want to give in. Mainly because if I do, I'm scared that I won't be able to face going back to work ever.

Sometimes knowing that others are experiencing similar thoughts and reacting in a similar way is a comfort of sorts.
I hope you don't feel too bad today.

With depression, it is very normal to have daily mood fluctuations.  Some people feel worse in the morning and better in the afternoon or evening; for others, it's the opposite.  While there are common symptoms of depression, which you display, each person's experience is different.

I'm sure everyone suffering depression lies about how they are feeling.  If people really knew the full extent of our personal hells, the majority would probably feel awkward in our company, so we tend to lie

It's best if people can continue working, it gives a focus, other than depression.  Have you been to see your GP about it?  He/she could refer you for therapy or you might want to consider trying antidepressant medication

Hi bb, it is indeed possible to have several ups and downs in one day, the ups can last for a few hours or just a few minutes, even something could happen that brings a smile and then in a few seconds your mind just snaps back again.
unfortunatly it is a sideeffect of D....

I know what you mean, bb.  I tend to have a prevalent low mood humming away in the background at present.  I have learnt to accept this, although my most positive time of the day is from 10 am to 1 pm.  Then I go back to feeling useless and pointless.

I've never been a 'morning' person and when I worked in an office the other co-workers would jokingly ask how many coffees I'd had when they walked in.  I was always in the first in but if they got a grunt they knew I was on my first coffee  :bgrin:

My mood does fluctuate during the day but more often than not on days I am busy.

I find that being busy helps distract me, but when I am less occupied, thats when I start to have fluctuations more.  but sometimes when I'm busy and have a setback in my work, that can start things off too.
