Having a baby when you are prone to depression
« on: October 19, 2012, 08:48:47 PM »
Hubby and I will really want to have children in the next couple of years but I am really worried because I get depression, take AD etc.... has any of you planned children while knowing that you are prone to depression? How did it go? Did you get postnatal depression? Was it worse than usual??

I had my son twenty years ago, as long as you can rely on your Hubby to step in and give you a hand/break when you need it, and if your family are willing to support you, I would go ahead with it, having a baby is exhausting, but wonderful, take breaks, and enjoy your baby.

Have you discussed it with your Doctor, he may be able to point you in the direction of a good Mother and Baby group, and don't be too proud or scared of asking for help , or advice.

A lot of people have children without thinking, and come unstuck , at least you are thinking before hand.  =+-

I agree with I.B Igor. If you have the support around you, you should be fine. I would consult your GP about wether the meds will affect trying in any way though. But I wish you all the luck in the world. I don't have kids of my own, but would love to have them. If you get pregnant you will have to keep us all up to date :D xx

Thank you!!!!
Hubby is very supportive and works from home. I want to wait until I am stable on the meds + make sure I have the right network to help (possibly a more regular therapist + find a supportive midwife you knows what depression is all about and will support me). I also need to check the meds I am taking are okay with pregnancy. I could stop them but that would be me in a terrible state.... it would be do-able but I would really not be a relaxed mummy!!!
