First session session of CBT tomorrow... advice needed!
« on: October 28, 2012, 01:49:06 PM »
I have my first session of CBT tomorrow and I have no idea what to expect :-/ Is there anything I need to do in preparation for it? Is it very emotionally draining?

In all honesty I'm so nervous about actually getting there that I have actually given any thought to the session itself. Any pointers would be very greatly appreciated...

Thankyou in advance xx
This too shall pass.

The first session will be a chance for your to meet your therapist.
You will talk about your depression and how it affects you 6 what you are hoping to be able to achieve from the sessions. The first session is more of a "get to know your therapist" and share what has been giving you concern type of session :)
CBT's great, see it as "me time"!! it can be emotionally draining, but not necessarily xx

Hi Munchroom, I did computerised CBT at our local MIND centre. I had situations to look at and had to write how I would react eg: you are walking through town and you see a friend but they do not speak to you. Then I had a choice of answers like - they saw me and decided to ignore me - I know they just didn't see me etc. I gave my answer and then it would take me through my answer and why I thought the way I did. Hope that helps a bit. I do hope it goes ok for you. Luv S x x x x

On my first session my therapist really got to know my background , what's happened in my life and the who the people in my life is,  and what I hope to get out of it.

I can't imagine doing computerised cbt though compared talking it out with an actual person
BEFORE YOU ACT, LISTEN
BEFORE YOU REACT, THINK
BEFORE YOU SPEND, EARN
BEFORE YOU CRITICIZE, WAIT
BEFORE YOU PRAY, FORGIVE

BEFORE YOU QUIT, TRY

The computerised version would suit me to a T, due to my reluctance to spend any time with people.

Munch....  I've no experience of CBT, only group therapy and one-to-one, but will be interested to hear how you get on.  Good luck, it's perfectly natural to feel anxious.  I'm sure the Therapist will have you feeling comfortable in no time

Good luck

Munchroom - how is your CBT going?  I've got my first session on Wednesday.  I know just what you mean when you said you had spent so long thinking about getting there, you hadn't thought much about the actual thing!  I'm a bit worried, as I'm so exhausted all the time, I'm not sure how I'll cope with the energy I'll need to actually challenge my issues.  Hope it's helped and that you're seeing a positive change!  $%$
