Flipping the Script on Hard Seasons
June 10, 2024
by Ruth Chou Simons

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison ...” 2 Corinthians 4:17 (ESV)

Recently, a massage therapist told me (after recognizing how immovable my shoulder was and how tense the base of my neck felt), “When you repeatedly operate out of alignment, you’re training your body to compensate for the injury with further damage.”

Upon further research, I found the spine can go out of alignment because the nervous system (brain and nerves) gets stuck in a stressed or tense state.  This sounds not unlike what can happen with our emotions and anxious thoughts. Fear and worry often get us so wound up and stressed that our thoughts begin to fall out of alignment with what God says is true.  If we’re going to realign the stories we tell ourselves with the true story of God’s Word, we have to know what He says about these right-now days of our lives. We’ll never flip the script on the stories we tell ourselves unless we’re given truer, more reliable stories to replace the ones we rehearse in our minds.  The truth about who God is and who we are in Him changes everything about how we think about “right now.”

Here’s what the Bible says about your “right now” and what it looks like to flip the script, aligning yourself with truth:

1.  Your hard season is ultimately light and momentary.

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison …” (2 Corinthians 4:17).

When Paul wrote this verse, he was preaching to his own heart, flipping the script on his circumstances! And in doing so, he was encouraging his readers and leading them back to the hope of the gospel.

2.  Your hard season is refining you.

“… for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that your faith more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-7, ESV).

The writer of this scripture, Peter, was helping believers rewrite the narrative of their situation to align with God’s plan for them and change the stories they were telling themselves about the difficult things they endured for a little while.

3.  Your hard season is producing endurance.

“… we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance …” (Romans 5:3, ESV).

Perhaps Paul, who wrote Romans, knew his readers would struggle to persevere so he gave an alternative to floundering in suffering: reason for rejoicing.

Are you letting how you feel about your current season tell stories that drive you to depend on God or that drive you away from Him?

Are the stories you’re repeating in your heart and mind informed by truth, God’s character, and who you are in Christ?

If not, return to the Word of God, and see what He has to say about your present troubles.  Let’s begin to flip the script on our hard seasons, shall we?

Looking for Life in All the Wrong Places
June 6, 2024
by Meredith Houston Carr

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10 (NIV)

Do you ever experience the nagging feeling that there’s a disconnect in some area of your faith?

Perhaps you love God and do your best to follow and serve Him faithfully. Maybe you volunteer at church, pray consistently and read your Bible. Yet one day, you encounter a scripture that leaves you feeling like you’re missing something like there’s a gap between what you know in your head and what you experience daily.  Several years ago, that's exactly how I felt when I read today’s key verse:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

At that time, I had no doubt about the thief’s devious workings. I’d watched him try to steal and kill my marriage, my hope, my dreams even my very faith itself.  Yet when I read about Jesus giving us life “to the full” (John 10:10)?

I couldn’t confidently say I was walking in that fullness. But why not?

What was I missing?

Maybe you’re asking the same question. Maybe you doubt that God’s promise of abundance is real and applies to you.  Let me assure you, dear one God’s promise stands firm. The problem lies in our tendency to look for life in all the wrong places!  We scan our lives horizontally, squinting for signs of life in relationships, health, wealth or status all around us but we’re left wanting. Even when life is chock-full of good things, our souls still feel scratchy and discontent, hungry for more.  This lack of contentment vexes us, but here’s the truth: If we could find abundance in the world’s offerings, we wouldn’t have needed the sacrifice of our Savior!  Jesus says, “I have come” (John 10:10), thereby signaling that our search for abundant life begins and ends in Him.  It’s an abundance we find vertically through relationship with God above, not horizontally through the gifts He places beside and around us on earth.  Earthly blessings are meant to be embraced and enjoyed, but they are never intended to bring us ultimate satisfaction. Only Jesus can provide genuine fulfillment, the type that can’t be shaken by our surroundings!  So how can you and I start living in abundance today?

First, we can take inventory. Who or what is currently shouldering the pressure of bringing us abundance?

Is it our job?

Our spouse?

Our children?

Let’s ask God to open our eyes to any areas of misplaced reliance.  Second, we can pray this simple prayer. Lord, I’m sorry for looking to [fill in the blank] for contentment and joy. Redirect my heart, and help me find abundance vertically, not horizontally.  A full life is part of our inheritance as God’s children, no matter our circumstances so let’s walk in that inheritance today!

Inside the Wuthering Heights-inspired Airbnb where you can stay for FREE and sleep like Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi

With at least 14 major film and TV versions in recent years, Wuthering Heights is one of literature's most adapted novels.  The village of Haworth in West Yorkshire has been capitalising on its links to the Brontë sisters for years, transforming from a struggling industrial town into a major literary tourist destination, with the Brontë Parsonage Museum serving as a central attraction.  And now, as anticipation builds for Emerald Fennell’s dark retelling of the classic story, guests can step into Cathy’s lavish Thrushcross Grange bedroom in West Yorkshire for an immersive overnight stay at an Airbnb inspired by the film.  The best news?

It's completely free.  I was invited to take an early look at the exclusive room, which is located on the grounds of the Jacobean manor, Holdsworth House in Halifax the hotel where Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi spent a night at during filming.  The room is at the heart of Brontë Country, where much of the film was shot and is just a 20-minute drive from Haworth, where the Brontë sisters lived.  But unlike the author’s humble home, Cathy’s bedroom at Thrushcross Grange is sprawling and luxurious.  Guests enter an unassuming stone building opposite the hotel, which opens up to a candle-lit, red velvet hallway.  Another doorway leads to Cathy’s sprawling bedroom with huge windows, decorated with opulent pink and gold.  The room channels Cathy’s intensity, offering guests a deeply personal window into her inner world, almost becoming a character of its own a feverish ode to Cathy as devised by her husband, Edgar Linton.   The skin-toned walls and layered textures make the space feel saturated with her presence, from strands of her hair woven into the table to the vein-like patterns that seem to pulse through the cushions.  Across the road, inside Holdsworth House, the dining room at Thrushcross Grange is brought to life, dressed in silver-toned finery and styled to mirror the film’s world.  Here, guests will be served rich Yorkshire dishes during an indulgent and themed candle-lit dinner, echoing the opulent meals seen on screen.  Beyond these rooms, couples can fall in love again and again, with the stay also including a horseback ride across the countryside, an indulgent afternoon tea, and an intimate listening session of the film soundtrack, featuring Charli XCX.  The stay also includes a visit to the Brontë Parsonage, the home of the Brontë sisters and their literary legacy.  The area has plenty of links to the big screen aside from Wuthering Heights.  Just some of the TV shows and movies that have been filmed here are Wild Child, starring Emma Roberts, Channel 4’s Ackley Bridge and BBC dramas, Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack and Riot Women.  While in the area, I visited Haworth and explored the local shops, church and graveyard.  At this time of year, the village is very quiet and peaceful - perfect for a romantic walk in the moors and a pub lunch.  Other nearby attractions include Shibden Hall, the 19th-century home of Anne Lister, Hebden Bridge and the Keighley and Worth Valley railway.  Dana Nussbaum, co-head of global motion pictures marketing at Warner Bros Pictures, said: ‘The Wuthering Heights that Emerald Fennell has brought to the screen was born of her vivid imaginings of not just Cathy and Heathcliff’s passionate romance, but of the wild world of the moors that surrounded them in Emily Brontë’s Yorkshire.  We are so excited to not only be able to share that singular experience with audiences when the film comes to theatres on February 13 for Valentine’s Day, but also to give travel buffs who are true romantics the chance to live it for themselves thanks to our partners at Airbnb.’

Cathy’s bedroom will be available for three separate stays for up to two guests each for stays across multiple days between 27 February and 4 March.   The experience is completely free of charge and includes breakfast, lunch and an evening meal.  Visitors will experience a curated itinerary inspired by the world of Wuthering Heights, blending cinematic romance with the landscapes, culture and heritage of West Yorkshire.  Three couples will be selected to attend across multiple days between February 27 and March 4.   The stay is designed for up to two guests across three nights.

Booking for Cathy’s Bedroom opens on February 20 via airbnb.com/WutheringHeightsMovie, with bookings being first-come, first-served.
