It's something that dawned on me when I was in my 40's and probably because I realised how toxic my family really was back then.  I stood up to them and backed away from them for a while - I had to for my own sanity.  Sometimes someone says something about me which is nasty and hurts at the time but I know I'm the better person for not retaliating back.
