Title: fighting depression and getting back in shape
Post by: jali on November 12, 2016, 10:52:56 PM
Hi,
I've been suffering with depression over 10 years now, it had/ has a strangle hold on me, some days are better then others, I started to feel depressed during my time at university, don't get me wrong I had friends, but family life wasn't too good, I've always had a svelte body, but started putting on weight around the time I was studying at university, I use to tell myself that I didn't have time to exercise due to my assignments, looking back it was me just making excuses, I had plenty of time I just did other things instead,

Let me tell you, when you start putting on the pounds people notice, it started off with the odd quip here and there, you know, puffing out their cheeks, to let me know I've put on some weight, or my favourite one, the finger jab to the gut, I would laugh it off, but deep down it hurt, In time my family jumped on the band wagon, and started letting me know I was looking HEAVY, but in my head it was the same old me, surely I haven't put on that much weight,

I can still remember the day I realised I was fat, it was unsettling to say the least, I was at a job interview and I was wearing an expensive pin striped shirt

, the interview wasn't go well, and to add insult to injury, I bent down to pick something up and my shirt ripped, right where my belly button is, I managed to hide the tear with my tie, I finished the interview and returned home feeling pathetic, I felt that way for a long time, falling deeper into the abyss.

I was a university graduate who didn't have a job, I felt like a complete loser I would spend all day online., It was during this time while on youtube when I stumbled across an old interview of Pat Morita AKA Mr Miyagi, he talked about a lot of things he had to over come in life, it struck a cord with me

it's this quote that helped me

"people say, well you gotta be lucky,
luck has an element, yeah you gotta have some talent,
yes you gotta be at the right place right time,
it takes a whole hell of a lot of perseverance passion and love,
and many many many steps along the way,
and not always in a direct line,
in order to get from here to there,
you have to walk side ways some, you gotta walk obliquely,
and maybe two step backwards for one step forward, and vise versa,
it's a whole process, it's called a life,
and as long as one, regardless of his or his perception of where they want that life to ultimately be, they cant give up,
for one reason or another, you know, your out of work, or life seems to be against you,
you hit all these bottoms, it can break your spirit, break your heart, and cause you a lot of grief and stuff,
you know if your really meant to get some where, regardless of what profession it is, your gonna get there, but you can not keep trying, to get there,
cause nobody hands you anything in life, we all know that,"

man, that really hit home for me, and thus filled me with a greater sense of vigour, I started training again, it's been a few years since, and I've managed to lose the weight and out on a little bit of muscle, I still have that ripped shirt, I like to look at it at times, it motivates me to never let myself become that way.

I've been documenting my progression, challenging myself, here's what I've done so far,

I know that was a long rant, but it's something I've been wanting get of my chest

Do you keep a diary or blog or anything like that?  I just know that sometimes there are things you don't want to make public is all.  I couldn't be without my blogs now!

Let it all out here and we will always listen to your words.  We may not have magic words or anything, but we all know where you're coming from 'cos we've prolly been there ourselves or can feel your pain.  Let it all out to us, Jali!

No, I don't really keep a diary or blog, I did contemplate keep a journal (manly version of a diary lol ) but I decided against it, I cant risk someone reading it, even right now as I type these words I feel some what ashamed, don't get me wrong I am a strong willed person, but it's the sadness and feeling of despair that get me down some times, I wish I didn't feel like this, but I am on the road to recovery, I felt a lot worse a few years back, I at least have a job now, be it a crappy one, but a job non the less, and those challenge videos give me a sense of accomplishment

How about a private blog and not giving anyone the url?  That's how I started mine and when I got used to seeing that big, fat zero in the "number of times read" column, I started putting more and more personal things in each time I needed to... maybe try that or something?   :happy0158:  Or use a totally different name for your blog that no-one would be able to connect to you?   :happy0158:

Welcome Jali,

I've suffered with depression for most of my of my life so have had to change my ways of coping over the years.

Welcome Jali,

I've suffered with depression for most of my of my life so have had to change my ways of coping over the years.

I've been suffering since by 20's im 32 now, it just sneaks upon you, i wish they would told me about the pitfalls of life in school, college or university, I've been kick in the proverbial teeth probably a million times, be it from getting ripped off from employers, to scammed  in life as well as online, (i'm looking at you ebay), it doesn't help that people these days have forgotten what kindness, compassion and decorum are,

my ways of coping is to train hard, push myself to be the best i can be, i'm done listen to the nay Sayers, and the people who have mocked me, I know as long as I keep trying i'll  get to where I need to be, I know it wont be easy, and i'll probably get smashed against the rocks, but that will just motivate me to try harder

thanks for the comments, it's just sloppy presentation, though that being said I now know why it happened, it would appear that the leg extenders on my tripod have become loose, and must of slid down a little while filming, cutting off my legs, it almost happen today when I was filming this weeks challenge, but I was able to nip it in the bud, before any damage was done, looks like i'll have to buy a new tripod,

Would you be able to use your current tripod until Christmas so that you can get a new one or money towards a new one without paying out too much of your own money?   ;)  Is there a temporary fix you can use on it or anything like that... sellotape or tightening the wheel or whatever?   ^-^

I'm guessing you are getting fitter and the Endorphins are kicking in each time you do it too!

Edited to add:  Don't suppose you know of any exercises to get rid of huge fatty thighs do you?  I'm getting muscular calves and my stomach is shrinking by walking the pup every morning but it's not affecting my thighs at all... I can only get jeans just above my knees because of my thighs being so big   :-\

Hi,

sorry for the late reply, thanks for the encouragement, i'm still training as usual, I've improved a lot since the videos, I'm still dealing with the depression, it's not as bad as it use to be, but I think it's something that I will have to battle with the rest of my life, spending time with my nieces and nephew helps a lot, i'm an animator/ graphic designer by profession, so my niece has been asking me to make an animation of her,

so after months of nagging I finally did it, boy was she happy, :happy0064:

I was going for a Mr bean for kids type of vibe I hope it comes a cross

They are all awesome video's, Jali!  WTG you!   :happy0064:

Just a bit of constructive criticism though, the "is" in "episode" is really hard for me to read, so maybe you could use a slightly darker background or font colour on each one you make?  Same with a couple of the letters in the bit at the bottom of episodes 1 and 2?

Sowwy!  Feel free to tell me to get knotted if you like, just thought I should mention it is all

I'll give the assisted squats (the first video) a go if I can find anywhere stable enough to support me holding onto it but there's no way I can do the exercises in the second video because I'm not stable enough on my feet and even laying on my side ones would weaken my knees too much... not trying to be a party pooper, just realistic is all   :(

I've never even heard of junior hammers and saws so you're one step ahead of me there!  lol  Maybe include a parent or much older sibling to it or something like that so that the child is still doing the hammering and sawing but they have adult supervision so that children aren't tempted to use their parents tools without supervision?

Just a thought so that you aren't sued after a child breaks their fingers with the hammer or slices through a vein with a saw is all   :happy0158:

Thanks for the reply, lol at being sued  ;), i'm aiming for the type of cartoon of a bygone era, you know like old tom and jerry and the loony tunes cartoons, mixed with a little bit of Mr Bean thrown in for good measure,, adding other characters will complicate things, it'll mean another character for me to draw and animate, I did contemplate it, like just drawing the lower half of the adult character, the same way they did it in tom and jerry, who know perhaps a might, but as it stand right now i'm trying to keep it simple,

It depends on the age of your intended viewer... if they can't confidently read for themselves then it's fine, but if they are learning to read or the parent wants them to read along then they will want to be able to read along on the tablet screen too... sowwy!

thanks for the reply, believe it or not my niece has lifted weights, not to the extent of the cartoon, she lifted 15kg with two hands mind you, she's unusually strong, but I do see where you're coming from, it was mainly for comedic effect, just like when she used the pull down machine and  it shot her up to the ceiling ;D

Do you know how to create webpage animations?  Do you do graphic design or video's?  Whichever one it is, get yourself over to Fiverr (not a typo, there really are two r's) 'cos they are a worldwide freelance dooberry that offers all kinds of things that people need.  Steve's on there as a web developer and I've used them to plan out novels for me when I'm stuck for ideas and you charge whatever you want then wait for people to find you!

Every time someone pays for you and you've done it, you need to put the ad up again 'cos it's taken down when you've got someone who has paid for your work which is slightly frustrating but it's all free... you only pay when you sell and you can look around the site for people who are looking for your type of things for free too.  It's the advertiser that pays when it's been done!

Bearing in mind that I know nothing about illustrating, how about putting your name out there on the interwebs to see if you can get your name out there too?  If you search for job sites advertising for illustrators then it might lead to something more permanent that you can do at home?

Good going!  The viewer discretion was because of the language used, yeah?  I was hoping it wouldn't be someone getting their head chopped off or throwing up or whatever, but swearing is OK by me... might be wise to send future swearing bits to Pip first though, just in case there are any small ears about when a member clicks on the link?

Hi.

Yeah, the discreation was for the language, lt's nothing anyone hasn't heard before, episode 3 will be more child friendly, p.s what did you think of epsiode 2? for anyone who isn't in the loop, there is an ongoing gag in the mixed martial arts community that edmond is in love with ronda, and that he is a creep, (well according to ronda's mother anyway) so all I did was, use sound bites to create a narrative,

It has potential, but it's not as good as your child ones that you did before these 2 episodes... sorry!  Maybe I'm just not used to grown-up stuff so can't give you any helpful feedback.  Keep going though, as long as you enjoy it you will find the right audience one day!

As it's for adults it needs to be a lot longer and more intense though as well as filling in the gaps between the different scenes - right now you start off OK then within literal seconds we're at the end... what happens in the middle?  Why does it go from broad daylight to the middle of the night in less than a step from the character?  Even for the most hardened walker, walking for hours on end will get boring... maybe the character could kick a can or stone or a car could pass or something?  Things like that... sowwy!

Go for it!  Might be wise to email their management if you're planning on anything other than personal pleasure with them though, 'cos of some kind of legal thing that stops you gaining profit for using their fame or something like that?  I ain't a legal bod, but surely it's better to be safe than sorry?  If they are just for you and the forum then forget I said anything though   :happy0158:

I hope you get a reply from the comedian!  If he replies, maybe ask for a quote that you can put in any future ones featuring him?  If he agrees it will give you such a confidence boost and by putting all your animations on a site, you can put other quotes from other featured famous bods too which will boost your ranking and you'll get more visitors and maybe even requests from others... you can so do this, Jali... remember us when you're famous?   ;)   :happy0064:

I get where you're coming from, I've been listening to this guy for 9 years now, he does have a thick new york accent, you're right about the background noise, the actual clip is longer but I decided to cut it short because of the noise, that being said, it's one of his most famous quotes and people have asked for an animated version of it,

feeling a little disheartened, sometimes it's the people closet to you that are the ones that can say things that hurt the most, I do all these animations and extra things in life and "THEY" still think I'm a loser, why can't I be like everyone else, is what they say, because i'm NOT, that's why,

if anyone here can retweet or pass on my animations to people you know it'll be much appreciated, i'll prove them all wrong one day, sorry for the rant, been eating away at me, since yesterday,  :bash:

yeah, I do post on facebook and twitter, I don't have many friends on facebook, only a handful, and the same goes for twitter, twitter is better because you can send direct messages to famous people, and it isn't considered creepy or annoying, i'm hoping someone recognises my efforts and I can get a following to do the thing I love the most, which is be creative, i'm more of a lone wolf type person, I don't really like working with other people, it's not that I can't I just prefer working by myself,

I know precisely nothing about how the animation world works, but is there a society you can join to help you to expand your reach or anything?  Not an agency or anything (unless you want to of course) but like peer support and crits from others who are animators too?  Similar to this forum but instead of being a depression support group, maybe a peer group for animators so that you can get feedback on your works, gain contacts in the industry and find the sort of job that you want... some way to earn money by working on your own but still that support to give and receive when you want/need it?  Like SCBWI and the SoA for children's writers and illustrators?

I agree with Uncle Joey... next week is going to be the best week of your life!  You can so do this, Jali... just keep giving it your best and grab every opportunity as it arises!  Make full use of the animation forum and don't forget about them or us when you're rich and famous!

Is there a book or website or anything that like that which lists all the companies looking for new talent right now?  Might be worth poking around on Amazon or your local library or asking the animation forum about what your next step should be?

Keep up the great work, Jali!   ;D

Yes I worked as a digital artist for a massive company, made good money but had to relocate to another city and worked long hours, don't get me wrong I enjoyed the work, but missed my nieces , I've been doing freelance work and working part time retail/ office work,

the problem with freelance work is, clients want the world but feel like it's ok to pay peanuts, i'm working really hard on my youtube channel and hope I could make something from it, plenty of people on youtube make a decent living, my channel is small at the moment but it is growing in numbers,

I would love for me to turn making animations on youtube, into my main source of income, it doesn't even have to be much,

for me it's not about money, but doing something you love and enjoy doing, I usually put in 5 hours a day, 5 days a week into my animations,
It's hard work but I enjoy it, I wish I had support from my family but they think it's just a stupid dream, I just need to believe in myself and keep pushing forward.

I understand how hard freelancing can be 'cos my hubby is a freelancer too.

I know I've prolly asked this before but my brain damage has made me forget - do you have a website for all your animations?  If not, I can help you to come up with a basic one if you want me to?  Either pure html or in an online editor like Wix or whatever?  You just need somewhere to put all your creations so that when you get a company interested in your work but want to see your portfolio, you can send them just one URL with all your animations listed instead of a list of YouTube URLs is all.

What about your CV?  Is that up to date?  You'll be able to put your site URL on that too so that future employers can feel impressed by your talents and call you in for an interview.

Do you have business cards ready to hand out too?  That's something else to think about too!

You know that the first little bit is blurry before it suddenly becomes really clear and HD-like though, yeah?  Keep going, Jali - you've got a real talent there!  Maybe contact Ariana Grande's musical team to see if there's like a team of fans you can join who make video's or animations or whatever from her music?

Don't give up too soon... maybe email the link to her management bods or fan club or something like that?  It's definitely not what most of her fans could do so hopefully if you get it to the people who look after her she stands more of a chance of seeing it?  Maybe don't expect a reply so that you don't get disappointed, but it's definitely something to be proud of and hopefully by going via the people that look after her too, you stand a better chance of her seeing and enjoying it?

Lookin' good, Jali!

Do you have a website to put all your animations on?  If not, it's definitely something to consider and it doesn't have to cost a single penny as long as you don't mind having ads on your site!

Might be wise to contact the people you animate in advance just in case they don't want you to do it though?  Just a thought

You've definitely found something you're good at with the animations!  How long, just roughly, does it take from you getting the idea to posting it up here please?  Are they drawn pixel by pixel too?  Which programme do you use to make them?

I usually plan well in advance the projects i'm going to undertake, the length of time it takes depends on how long the audio clips I animate to are,
for example, a 1 minute piece of audio could take between 2 - 3 weeks, I use a combination of frame by frame and tween animation, I use Adobe flash cs6,

thank you for you kind words, i'm just finding it difficult to grow my youtube channel, it bums me out some times, I put in so much effort and it feel like i'm not getting anywhere, Every animation I do I try to push my skill and try to add something new, I just have to keep on trucking and maybe i'll get somewhere  :(

This is by no means a quick solution, but do you have a website that you put all your animations on?  Ideally with your own domain so that it's ranked higher in search engines but it's a great way to get your talent out there!

I've got a link on my homepage about how to create a basic webpage for free so that might be the next step for you?  It takes maybe an hour to get the basics of a subdomain and hosting sorted on Bravenet and I think the more frequently you update the index page and get those meta-tags chosen well, the easier you are to find by Jo Public.

Domain names and hosting cost you money but they are sooo worth it and it looks more professional too.  It's better to be able to remember "jo-public.com" rather than "my_subdomain.freehost.com/?457934/#RaNdomcharActers/m0reCharacters" right?  lol

Adobe flash cs6 is one of the best you can use but that's the problem it takes time to promote anything including your channel.

I know enough about websites to get myself online but my hubby is a web developer by trade and I can put you in touch with him for some advice if you want me to?  He knows his onions 'cos within a few months of creating a site for someone from scratch, she had her first sale after the customer found her site in Google.  She was over the moon and it was all purely because of what Steve did.

He can build your site and support it for you for a year for a really good price if you want?  I'll PM Pip now to see if she approves of his URL and if she does, I'll try and remember to put it here for you!

Pip's approved the site so the URL is http://dohsoft.co.uk/ (http://dohsoft.co.uk/) - quotes available on request and his brother can do the graphics for an additional price too!

Title: Re: fighting depression and getting back in shape
Post by: Amanda_George on June 05, 2019, 01:31:26 PM
You can start by putting it in your email sig and on forums and stuff like that (click on the globe on my profile, here on the forum, to get to my navigation page for example).  If you've got Facebook or Twitter you can add the link to your profile and Steve can help you with getting into search engines like Google and Bing.  Steve's contact details are on his site.

I know nothing about how to get listed on search engines except that you need to regularly update your index page to stay listed in them.  Steve's definitely the man to ask about things like that!

Ah right... is there any way you can maybe put in the two end bits (head and foot of the cot) or maybe a mobile or pillow or something like that to make it more obvious maybe?  Give it more of an extra dimension that it's not thin and attached to the wall?  Sorry!  You're so good at the animations, it just needs a little bit more work on the cot to make it more immediately obvious what it is?

:arms: if you'll accept it from me now?

I know precisely nothing about animations, but what I've seen so far have been amazing!  Maybe try making the video's a bit longer and coming up with a series so that you can gain a following?  Definitely get a website created so that you can just put new ones on there to give to people instead of trying to find YouTubes weird URLs?  How would you feel about researching (small to start off with) companies who create animations both online and eventually on the telly to see if they are interested in what you are creating?  It'll take a lot longer, but if you can get your animations to like 10 or even 15 minutes long, then I definitely see a potential career in animation for you!

comparison video, my channel is really starting to grow now, i'm getting closer to 1000 subscribers, I've been working really hard over the last few years, it would be amazing to make some money from my youtube videos, I know I have a long way to go, maybe some day it will be an achievable goal

I've got zero knowledge about YouTube, other than uploading video's to put onto my site but if you created a website with a members area that you have to pay to enter, maybe you could put most of your video's in there?  Or charge like £1 per subscriber to see each new video?  You've got a lot of subscribers and a great talent, so hopefully you will be able to make some money off them?

thank you for your kind words and support, really appreciate it, I take no credit for the voices, it was done by someone else, the original video is in the youtube description, I just remade the visuals and animation, I watched clips of the shows online and tried my best to emulate them, i'm always trying to push myself and improve with each animation.

Definitely you... the only thing the one on the right did better was the text at the bottom as it was said.  If the one on the right is the professional one, then get your CV up-to-date and ready to send off, Jali, definitely!  You've got a glittering career in front of you 'cos yours was definitely better than the one on the right!

You're doing so well... keep on keeping on and you'll be giving the pro's something to seriously worry about!  Did you draw each frame pixel by pixel or did you "borrow" them?  If you drew them yourself then you're already up there with the pro's!

Hi,

thanks for your kind words, yes I do enjoy making these animations, as time consuming as they are, they give me purpose and something to work towards, each time I complete one, its like a small victory, and I gain a lot of knowledge and experience, I think that was why I was feeling depressed, I was floating around like a leaf I the wind, so to speak,

yeah, slow and controlled press ups are a lot harder, its like the saying, "if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself", i think I might have done 210 to be honest, I might do videos like this at least once a month, the animation videos take so long I need to supplement my youtube channel with more regular content,

I enjoy doing both, the animated videos take on average 6-8 weeks, the exercise video are physically demanding, just need to keep pushing myself and see where it leads, hopefully to the road of success

thanks, i'm always trying to improve and build upon what i have learnt, I work really hard on the animations, on average they take 12 weeks, unfortunately i'm not getting the youtube views I would have hoped for, maybe someday I will be a successful youtube animator :chin:

Your hard work really shows!

Sorry you aren't getting the views you were hoping for - if you have a website then maybe put them on there with a link to your site in all your sigs and stuff?  Don't you dare give up, the views will start slowly increasing and you might get overwhelmed then!

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the kind words, I wont give up, it's just that I work so hard on my animations and get very little recognition, I know I just need to keep pushing forward and maybe some day I'll catch a break, who knows :chin:

here a new animation, it's an intro for one of my favorited podcasts

Who are you animating for, Jali?

Maybe take a look deep inside your heart and just make sure that you're doing it for the right reasons (ie for you instead of for the views)?

You sound like me in many ways when I first started doing my blog - I was searching for things to put in it for other people instead of myself and I got very low and even suicidal when I didn't get as many views as I wanted each day but I came to a realisation that I need to do it for me and if other people want to read my mad mutterings then that's a bonus, but my main reason is that I need to get things out of my head and somewhere that I can hold myself accountable.

What I'm saying and probably failing at, is that you need to look at this selfishly... do it because you enjoy it rather than for getting the views... they should be a bonus rather than the main reason.

Sorry if I've hurt you by saying that.

:arms: if you'll accept it from me now?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I create these animations for myself, yes it would be nice to get the views, because lets face who doesn't like lots of views right?, ultimately I do it because i've  always loved art, animation and all things creative, I studied animation at university and even worked for a big graphic design studio, but I was creating the art they wanted and not my own, that was the driving force behind doing these youtube animations, I know as long as I keep creating theses animations I will eventually get the recognition I would like, I've had a good few people on youtube tell me my animations are cool and my channel is underrated which is always nice,

anyway I just finished another animation hope you guys like it

I've got no idea who Scott Pilgrim is, but the speed of their speech must have taken forever to animate!  This is your best one so far, Jali!

Hi Guys,

Just finished another one, trying my hand at short form videos, this should allow me to upload more often, instead of every 8 to 12 weeks, hope you like it.

Good going, Jali!

I'm soo out of touch with South Park now and didn't recognise the two characters in the classroom... are they new characters or do I need to catch up on the last 7-10 years since I last watched an episode?  lol

hi, sorry for the late reply, its stan and Kyle, but the character designs and animated are done in the style of a cartoon called the loud house, hence the different look,

anyway I just finished another piece, it's the Chinese &$%+ty wok guy from south park,
