Title: hot weather, sleep and euro 2016!!!!!!!!
Post by: milkyjoe on June 11, 2016, 10:36:59 AM
hi im back!!

A week ago my doc agreed to reduce my citalopram from 40mg to 30mg(im sure its not working anyway). almost immediately my sleep has suffered. I started having trouble dropping off.

Im thinking that the hot weather is to blame, but 4 days on and its getting worse. my mood has always been pretty low for years so any probs and i go backwards fast.

and now euro 2016 is on and my mates wanna go boozing to cheer mighty england on. what do i do? go back to 40mg or change?

thanks for reading! and hopefully giving me some advice.

What is your bedtime routine?  Do you keep your bedroom window open all day to cool the bedroom down?  What about removing the duvet?  I'm just trying to think of things I do is all   :-\  What about only going to bed when you can barely keep your eyes open and then listen to the radio and read a magasine until you fall asleep?  That's what I do every night   ;)

hi amanda, sorry for late reply. i been in hell for a while now.i just dont seem to sleep. going docs today to hopefully get some help for my lack of sleeping. if i get no help im prob gonna go back to drink. which i dont wanna do.

As for your questions i dont leave window open as my wife gets scared,i dont have a duvet either. i leave tv on as i get even more anxious when its off. i drop off to sleep for about 2 seconds and its infuriating. if i read i get really tired but soon as i stop im fully awake. i need something to relax me really. but docs dont seem to wanna know :(

I hope your doc can help you today!  I used to be the same as you so I really do understand, but I can also tell you that you can get out the other side too.  Do you go to bed before or after your wife usually?  Maybe you could read a magasine and keep reading until you fall asleep?  Do you have a TV in your bedroom or just downstairs?  Maybe watch TV and read until you fall asleep so that you can pick up where you left off if you wake up during the night?  That's what I used to do  :happy0158:

Hi. Yeah I do read and I go to bed same time as wife. But need to get a lamp as having light on affects my wife's sleep. Doc gave me propranolol today for my anxiety disorder. Its so frustrating that it keeps flaring up. I wish I could not care whether I sleep or not. That would be fine. But its an absolute catastrophe if Can't sleep.  Wonder if hypnosis could work?

Hypnosis, like anything, will work for some people but not others.  Personally I couldn't go through with it due to the fear of having more to feel anxious about and / or more to feel depressed about.

I was taking Citalopram for a while but it only worked for a short time.  Now I am on Sertaline 150mg and with all the medication I'm on I should be sleeping well which includes Tramadol.  I also take Amitriptyline 50mg which was for pain initially (10mg) but with doctor's supervision I raised it gradually to 50mg to help me sleep.

Of course it depends on what meds you are on over what your doctor will prescribe you.  My best advise is see your doctor and be completely honest even if it sounds silly as it will help your doctor to help you.

How would you feel, just as an experiment, going to bed when you can barely keep your eyes open instead of at the same time as your wife?  There's a lamp I think I've seen on Amazon that is a sort of light on a strap around your head which is just bright enough to read by but would hopefully not affect your wife's sleep... might be worth a try?

Do you exercise during the day?  Hopefully that would keep you awake during the day but wipe you out at night?

I haven't got any experience of hypnosis, but like Pip said, it works for some, but not others... maybe research it but don't book anything yet?

Yeah. If I could persuade the wife to go to bed on her own I can try it. I will see if I can get a head lamp type thing cost reading is the best option.

Maybe introduce it slowly - go to bed later one night a week for a month then two nights a week, then three, then four etc?  Introduce it slowly and hopefully you will both get the sleep you need?   :happy0158:

It sounds like it would really help you if you can find the software!  What sort of tablet have you got?  I've got a Kindle Fire   :D

hi. i have a motorola xoom tablet. okay so quick update. went to docs and im off citalopram  :happy0158: . i think the doc got sick of constantly harassing him, he changed my meds to 30mg of mirtazapine anhd gave me some zopliclones. im to stop immediately with the cit and go straight onto the mirt. scary stuff  :scared003:
think im gonna suffer some side effects. i wont be using the zopiclone though. but its a relief its there.

I hope the Mirtazapine works better for you than the Citalopram did, Joe!  Are you seeing a psychiatrist or anything like that or just your GP?

I haven't got a clue, and I'm not qualified to answer, so maybe phone your GP tomorrow to find out one way or the other?  In my non-qualified opinion though, maybe it's too much of the Mirtazapine or side effects from it because you suddenly stopped taking it instead of gradually tapering off the Citalopram?  That's just my unqualified opinion though

I'm glad the sedation isn't so bad today... hopefully that will wear off the longer you take the Mirtazapine?  I still reckon you should call your GP today, just to make sure it's the right dose for you though!

Were you able to call your GP today?  I'm just worried that you're taking too much Mirtazapine or something is all and don't want you to accidentally take too much is all    :confused0062:

yeah im gonna see my gp monday. im sleeping fine on them but the sedative part doesnt wear off. im groggy all day. and noticed im getting angry quicker lol. might just come off ads all together and ride it out.
Title: Re: hot weather, sleep and euro 2016!!!!!!!!
Post by: Amanda_George on July 09, 2016, 02:54:33 PM
Might be worth sticking it out in case the sedativeness wears off as your body gets more used to the sudden change?  Maybe see if there is anything your GP can suggest to get the sedation to wear off quicker or something?

i heard about a soluble version of mirtazapine which works faster and your body expels it faster also. that sounds gggrreeat :D

Might be something to ask your doc about then!   :happy0158:  I'm guessing it'll need to be taken at the same time every day though, unlike the tablets?   :chin:

i feel like an absolute tit. i was browsing the internet earlier and come across fatal familial insomnia. as im not sleeping too well i have self diagnosed this for me. i hate myself so much sometimes. i really can be my worst enemy. im thinking of drinking tonight and skipping my mirtazapine.  my mind is so fragile, i had a good day yesterday and now its all gone. :(.......................................................................................

Same with me... we can be our own worst enemy at times   :(

How far away from your GP do you live?  If you live close by or can get there at very short notice, might be a good idea to phone your surgery in the morning to see if you can get on their cancellation list or something?

yeah im ringing tomorrow. i can always get an appointment if i ring at 0800. citalopram withdrawing is tough also. head zaps are knocking me about. 100 people have ffi and they got it from their familes who also died from it. my mind is so outrageous its laughable sometimes.

Got docs tomorrow. Gonna get referred for cbt and sleep clinic. At this moment my mood is fine.

My sleep isn't so good however, I can drop off no problem but can't stay asleep so night times is very boring and long.

I'm also off my meds as couldn't get on with the mertazapine and I'm withdrawn from the ineffective citalopram.

My wife has said my snoring and choking is a lot worse so I'm sure its sleep apnoa that is preventing my sleep.

Hopefully doc agrees

Hi, I turn all electrical items off at ten pm and starrt unwinding.  Go to bed at eleven , lights are off and room is cool so I chat to the wife for ten then I'm asleep. I wake up at 230 am and from then on I'm waking every ten to twenty minutes I'm not 100 percent awake so I don't get the urge to get out of bed but when I do get up at six am my brain and eyes really hurt. Its been like that for about 3 days in a row now. My mood is fine. Its so hard to explain how my brain works. From 230 am I get the same boring dream and I'm constantly turning over and over but not fully awake. Ithink I got some sort of apnea.

Do you have any pets or anything like that you could stroke when you first wake up at 2.30am?  What about having a warm, relaxing bubble bath or something like that?  Do you get any exercise to raise your heartbeat and blow away any fuzziness in your head?  How about putting a couple of drops of lavendar oil or something like that?   :happy0158:

hmmm never tried any  of that. i think the bizarre feelng i get when im asleep could be some sort of recurring nightmare even though i dont dream of anything. must be some sort of withdrawal symptom of citalopram or something

Maybe mention it to your GP to see what s/he suggests?  I swear by bubble baths and lavender oil and meditation and stuff... I also found that the less I slept the more worried I became about it.  Are you seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist or anything like that?  I'm just thinking a psychiatrist could help with the meds and the psychologist could help you to talk about things in confidence to a professional is all

How do you feel about being back on the meds?  What about the sleep apnoea?  Steve's got that so if you've got any questions about it, I can ask him if you want me to?

Did your GP give you any ideas of how to cope in those 4 weeks while you're waiting?

I'm glad you slept OK last night... I hope you get to sleep at a reasonable time tonight too!

Hi. Only thing I could do with answering is does your husband become aware he keeps waking up? I'm okay on the meds, just didn't wanna take something I know I'm gonna wanna get off further down the line. My insomnia has gone on for such a long time I m starting to not care about it. Having to wait a month to see a specialist in cbt just shows how inadequate the funds are towards mental health issues

He's aware of the waking up at the time, but when I mention it the next morning he doesn't remember it at all.  Also, he sleeps throughout the day as well as at night because he's so exhausted.  He had to have a weird test to confirm it where he had to wear a weird oxygen level monitor over just one night then the hospital took the information out of the machine, read it and diagnosed him with it.  Totally painless, just very weird he said at the time.

Sorry, I haven't read all the posts so if I repeat anything Amanda has written please ignore me  ;) .  My husband got diagnosed with sleep apnoea four years ago and is supposed to wear a mask that's attached to a small machine.  When he used it he didn't snore and had quality sleep but hasn't used it in a long while so I suffer his snoring.  The scary part was finding out he stopped breathing 58 times in an hour.

Do you wear yourself out during the day?  If you sit with your computer or the telly on then you won't be using your energy up from the food you eat so it'll still be buzzing around your body when you go to bed.  I'm not suggesting you run a marathon (unless you want to) or anything like that, but maybe offer to walk a dog or get off the bus a stop sooner or walk round the block a few times or something like that?  I haven't had insomnia since I've been walking the pup every morning!

Are you on any meds?  If you are, do you think they are working?  How would you feel about changing to/starting one that has tiredness as a side effect?  The Olanzapine does that for me... it doesn't knock me out for 12 hours like the Zyprexa did, but it definitely speeds up the time it takes me to fall asleep!

I'm defo not active at all. Think that's a major problem in my life. I really don't have he urge to do anything at all these days. Lack of Sleep has depressed me that much.

Totally understand 'cos I was the same until recently.  Do you have a garden you can potter around in or are you near a hospital that might help too?  It's just that when I came out of hospital I was very unsteady on my feet so they prescribed a 6 week, twice a week in their gym... nothing too strenuous, just using the bike thing... maybe you could ask if there is anything like that where you are?

Edited to add:  Even once around the block a couple of times a week will help to burn off the energy and make you tireder sooner.  If you need a reason to go around the block, maybe try going to places you haven't been for a while to see if anything has changed?  Or go out and take photo's of the area you live in?   :happy0158:

Thanks for the advice. I will take few walks and see how it goes. I don't like to walk to far as my thoughts are never positive. But I need to do something to tire me out.

You don't need to walk far and please start off slowly, just get the tiredness out of you until bed time!  Just walk around the block once a week then twice a week then take it from there!  You won't be far from home and you can go back whenever you want to - just take things at your own pace!   :happy0158:
