I don’t know when the name ‘witch’ was first used, but I wouldn’t be surprised to know it was during the early years of the so called ‘Dark Ages’ (about 400 – 1000),
During this period anyone with the slightest scientific thought would be executed in some rather nasty way. If it wasn’t for this 600 year period in history that suppressed free thinking (what we call research) we could well be colonizing other planets by now.

Throughout history there have been people (witches \ shaman) who have had a good understanding of roots, herbs, funguses and the like that when mixed in a particular way can treat certain ailments, for example, particular mosses have antibacterial properties. There was no so called magic spells in this at all.
