Title: CBT therapy on NHS
Post by: suze on April 15, 2011, 07:00:41 PM
I have been told that I have been refused therapy on the NHS as my PHQ score is too high and am confused...has anyone else been told this and have they managed to get help anywhere else.

I am unable to afford private therapy and feel helpless, was hoping it would help :'(

Hi Suze - I'm very new to the fourms and have only just seen your post. When I was first diagnosed with depression my doctor did a PHQ test on me and he said we'd have to do them at regular intervals.... I think I had 2 follow up ones (one was better, the other worse...) and never heard anything about them ever again! I have a feeling its another one of those things dreamt up by someone sat behind a desk with absolutley no idea about how depression effects your day-to-day life! I found the options on the questions were so broad... like many tick box things, theres no room for explination.

I hope since you made the post you have had a bit more luck! Keep us informed x

Hello Suze,

Were they talking about the computer based CBT? I was turned down for it at first because of my score. I think it's because you do have to put in a fair amount of effort to make CBT works, and if you are struggling it can make things worse or frustrating. Are you on medication? If so this should help take the edge off things and help you get to a point where you can use CBT.

I would recommend these books to you, to help understand the principles:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cognitive-Behavioural-Therapy-Dummies-Willson/dp/0470018380
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Depression-recovery-self-help-programme/dp/1849010668/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305491630&sr=1-1

First one is laid out so simply - good stuff. The second one is harder reading, but is written more from the point of view of someone who's 'been there'.

Good luck :)

Hi Suze,

Sorry to hear about this, NHS are silly, really annoying sometimes!

I wouldn't give up on the idea of CBT though, I did CCBT which is just CBT on the computer, and I was referred from my Doctor for free, I'm not sure if they will do the same sessions in your area or not but heres the website that I did the CCBT with:

Hope this helps, x
