Title: Ways of coping when you have a bad patch
Post by: iggyelvis on May 20, 2013, 12:02:29 AM
I feel my coping methods are not the best but it is hard to think ways of handling a bad head which really help.

Have you tried CBT?

Sorry I can't remember if you have or not so if you haven't it may be worth your while.  For me what's helped to cope is living in a small town and being a member of the Methodist church.  We got to know quite a few people because we have dogs plus we talk to other dog walkers regardless of whether we have ours out with us.

We do quite a bit at church including helping with the weekly lunch club which is held on Fridays.  It's really brought me out of myself.  We volunteer for the credit union twice a week at the local collection point and part of the cleaning team.  The fact that I am keeping physically busy as well helps as there is always someone to tal to so it takes my mind occupied.

It nearly always helps to get out, as just seeing other things than the 4 walls helps stop focussing on the bad things. Physical exercise can help lift moods. I'm afraid that I don't do a great deal to help myself. I know the things that I should do to help myself, but seldom see them through.  t2618 So, for heavens sake, don't do what I do! Best wishes. :bye:

Cat does not work for me.   My worst time is at night when I can do nothing else.

Night is my worse time too, I tend to wake up early, if I get to sleep at all. I used to lay in bed tossing and turning but now I tend to get up and have a drink of something that doesn't contain Caffeine. The break seems to help with the prospects of getting back to sleep.

If that doesn't work I give up on sleep, go downstairs and lie on a settee and try to get some rest at least. I do Mindfulness Meditation sometimes. It calms me down and slows up my thoughts. Google would lead you to instructions as to how to go about it I'm sure.

I have sleeping tablets books and cats. There are my options when I can't bear the world.
