Title: Venlafaxine side effect - ELECTRIC SHOCKS?!
Post by: Nay on December 07, 2012, 10:21:54 PM
Hey guys.

Ben on Venlafaxine for about 7 weeks now. Since I've been taking them, I've noticed that I get small electric shocks. Does anyone else get this?

Since I overdosed on Citalopram 2 weeks ago, this has become a more frequent occurrence, often happening nearly every day. Now they are bigger shocks and they are starting to hurt! I even got a shock from the door handle to my office the other day that was so big, it passed through to the other side where a colleague was also touching the handle! The shock was so bad it left a mark on her hand!

I read that 'zapping sensations' are a side effect, but this is just getting wierd (and painful!)

Is there anything I can do? I do get red marks on my hands when I get the bad shocks.   Is this normal?!

I only get the brain zaps if I am late for my tablets. I need to take them quite religiously. I can't remember if I have taken them or not today but I have the jitters so will take them.

If the symptoms are affecting you all the time I would go back and see your GP.

I did have a lot of side effects the first month on Venlafaxine - sore head, upset stomach and generally feeling spaced out but this passed.

I would definately double check things to be on the safe side. What dose are you taking?

wow never ever heard of electric shocks as a side effects to medication.

I would definitely seek medical advice about it.

I had brain zaps when I weened myself off duloxetine, they did pass. Now back on the duloxetjne. I do think you ought to talk to your gp, to put your mind at ease.

Yes, electric shock SENSATIONS are very common and are considered to be a withdrawal from AD's.  They can occur with mild to severe dizziness, but usually only lasts seconds at a time, although they do usually come in rapid succession.

When I used to take only AD's, I'd forget quite a lot.  The reminder would come the next afternoon around 4pm, in the form of these little electric shocks travelling from the head to the finger tips and toes.  It's over in an instant but can re-occur at 1 to 10 min intervals.

When I mentioned this to my GP, he didn't know what I was talking about.  Then I watched a documentary about Seroxat (which I was on)  People were reporting similar sensations to varying degrees.  Since then I've met one doctor who hadn't heard of it and two more who recognise it as AD withdrawal.  I imagine it has something to do with the central nervous system

I also pick up a lot of static, more so when I'm distressed.  If I stroke the cat while he's sitting on a nylon cushion cover, we both get a little shock, it just happened tonight.  I imagine what material and shoes you wear will make a difference

have you ever had issues in the past where static has tended to duild up in your body,
i know it sounds like a bit x file ish, but some people are very suseptable to atmospheric conditions.

I've had little zaps every so often in my life, but nothing that hurts and marks like this. It's very odd. The only time I ever remember getting static shocks was in Woolworths as a kid!
