Been mulling over this for around 2 months now, ever since my cbt therapist recommended it, telling my boss that i suffer from depression !! ...
I work in a nursing home and I'm afraid that telling my boss that I have depression could hold me back, that the word gets out about my illness and reaches back to my family etc, and could have an effect on my work and the way that people treat me.
Only one other person knows about whats wrong with me and that another work partner, but does not know how bad it is sometimes, I just cant bear to tell anyone one or allow my family to find out , i even hide my medication.
I'm just totally lost.

Hi Mat :) I work in a nursing home too. My bosses know all about my depression and have been incredibly supportive. Its one of the hardest jobs to do when we are feeling at our worst... It can be emotionally draining at the best of times!!
I've often been surprised at the response I get when I tell people about my depression -a suprising amount of people can relate to it. Obviously every workplace is different but if my bosses weren't aware then I don't think I could be working there without their support.
Good luck x

It's always a worrying thing telling anyone that you have depression as there is still so much prejudice out there. I would say it depends on your boss. If they're are someone you think you could rely on not to discredit you too much for it and not to spread it around then it's for the best. In the past I've been in trouble because of mood changes due to my depression that were noticed and because I hadn't told anyone higher up I was ripped for it, even though I then told them. So far higher up's knowing hasn't harmed me and has sometimes helped me when I've been especially down.
