Title: what are you listening to?
Post by: Stormhead on June 16, 2010, 11:30:17 AM
this was a really popular thread on my old forum.
I find music can help lift my mood dramatically when I'm feeling low or clam me down when i'm angry.
what have you been listening to lately? post links so others can listen and maybe find a new band they like!

I've been listening to a lot of Reel Big Fish, who are one of my favorite bands:

Hope the quality's ok, Posting from work so i can't watch them and check.

Know what you mean stew, my era is the 70's. My problem is I tend to listen to stuff that I know will upset me.

See, i do the opposite. if i know somethings going to upset me i knock it out of my happy playlist. but i listen to music the way other people smoke cigerettes.."feeling stressed, going for a quick song.." lol

I used to use music to lift my mood, mainly ub40 but the one that made me smile everytime was mmmbop, But now it makes me think of the things i have lost, the guitar used to help too but i only learnt the slower songs like stand by me and swing low, all to painful to play now.

this may be strange but when i get down i listen to rock music  like evanesance , the rasmus etc it seems to help me it works for me i find other music distracting  and if that fails a movie with a cup of tea always does the trick .

Hey all :D

I have to agree with [[disordered]] -- the XX have done some really beautiful easy listening stuff.  I find when I'm in a low mood I always want to listen to music that matches that -- today I've been listening to:

Muse - Exogenesis Symphony Parts 1, 2 & 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZD0yp-E0rw);
Ennio Morricone - The Crisis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvmOm6lJx7w); and
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck).

Just three (well, five I suppose!) of my favourites.  They are classical (slash classical rock opera) pieces so not to everyone's taste, but I find them to be quite therapeutic and healing.  Music that is food for the soul.  They don't always bring me out of my low mood, but they let me ride it out knowing that someone else understands.

Just food for thought -- I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that composers like Mozart and Beethoven are now known to have had manic depressive personalities, and I think it's true that tortured souls are often the most talented.  On the bright side, at least we have something interesting to share in any artistic work that we create.

I find all types of music intriguing when I'm down.
I'll quickly turn off if anything modern comes on the radio but my own preferences range from Abba to The Prodigy!! Lol!

Currently in my cd changer are Paloma Faith, The Prodigy, Queen: Rocks, Billy Joel, ACDC and Neil Diamond.

A favourite at the moment is Noah and Whale: Blue Skies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2kVTkqw6Rc

It's a song about hope with a beautiful melody and great lyrics including:

"Do anything to be happy,
because blue skies are coming
But I know that it's hard"

Somewhat appropriate for this forum!

When I get peace (rarely) I have the same routine. Flick through my varied range of songs on my ipod, from Robbie, to David Gray, to Ministry of Sound, to guns n roses to rage against the machine, but I always fall back on my chilled ibiza album. Always the first disc. It instantly relaxes me. :-).

I tend to listen to all sorts of things - When I am feeling low though, I do tend to listen to a lot of Garbage. Shirley Manson is pretty much an idol in my eyes!! Knowing that she has battled depression most of her life and has still achieved the things that she has is very very reassuring at times.

I think one of thier most powerful songs is The Trick Is To Keep Breathing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBz8iXdddqY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBz8iXdddqY) I adore this song - and then I found out that Shirley Manson wrote it after reading a book of the same title, which I subsequently bought and am now partway through!

But there are so many that I listen to the lyrics and really get the feeling that someone else understands (I won't link them all because some of the lyrics could be triggering) . Bleed Like Me (the title pretty much says it all...) Why Do You Love Me?, Silence Is Golden, Only Happy When it Rains, Medication, Drive You Home, Untouchable, I Think I'm Paranoid... the list goes on!

Have spent a lot of time playing this today, it helps to keep the depression, and therefore the alcohol intake at bay. Enjoy!!!

I really don't know what to do without my iPods. I find music helps a lot. Not when I'm really down - just  down. I like a broad spectrum of music and find different music for different downers, I once went through a 'Death Metal' phase which was great for my anxiety  />.

I also find listening to audiobooks on my iPod VERY helpful because it does not require as much concentration as actual 'reading' where I tend to start reading the same line over and over.

I find music about sadness to be the most uplifting. Elliot Smith & Jon Brion are beautifully poetic. When I'm in a happy mood, one of my nostalgic records os the first Artic Monkeys LP, reminds me of easier times and the life I used to live, was so relatable when it came out.

Foo Fighters new album 'Wasting Light' - The track "Walk" I can relate to coming out of a depression. Makes me feel happy and sad at the same time.

one of the symptoms/problems of experiencing depression for me is that things/interests which afre usually my life blood become really difficult.music is one-whilst im not a musician,im not just a passive fan.at various times in my life ive been actively involved with music as a promoter/manager,campaigner,teacher/writer.music really is mostly lifeblood and soundtrack.

it can enhance and contribute to mood change but when im depressed like now it either turns ash grey like dust and any imaginative, creative response i might have is emptied out or i find myself ine th difficult maelstrom of alienation-distress-rage which for me is the key symbol of my depression.

i dont want to feel sorry for myself though.given my professional background and training, when in depression i find my tendency/ability to self observe with a distorted kind of interest, really extremely irritating.so if im stuck with it im determined to make it useful.

that said the effort required,to self observe and engage in any activity that ius usually important for me,is in turn really exhausting.

i dont mean to be perverse, but im just glad that "happiness",whatever that is,is not particularly important to me.being authentic and living a life fully is much more important for me.

I keep posting lately, and really hope it does,t bug anyone. I am new and panicking with my g.ps diagnosis of depression. I am in myself panicking, that I don't want to be here in this situation, but hell ok I am. I would really like to keep chatting here and reply to new members, and to try to get everyone posting with everyday things.

i listen to virtually anything but recently i keep listening to the streets, a grand dont come for free album in order, i like the way that if you listen all the way though its a brilliant story, i some feel like i can relate to it and it relaxes me.
i also spend a lot of time listening to dub step as its random yet repetitive and thats the way i see my life now.

Its funny you say about never really listening to rock before Cornish - I definitely feel my music tastes have changed over the past year....

Really getting into The Doors and the moment - and The Rolling Stones. Also really really want to hear some more Pixies stuff. Have been listening to a lot of Meat Loaf.... but also Seasick Steve and Laura Marling...

I was listening to 'She & Him - Volume 1' in the night.... pretty much all of that album sums up feeling towards one aspect of my life at the moment - and also 'Cats Eyes - You're not my friend' Amazing song.....
