Title: Has anyone else got a bunny?
Post by: CharleysAngel' on August 15, 2012, 07:21:02 PM
Just wondering if anyone else here has a bunny as I need some advice. He needs his nails trimmed as he keeps cutting himself. Only problem is he doesn't really like sitting on peoples laps and he is a big rabbit. He is looking a bit scraggy as he is quite old and I don't want to hurt of upset him. I can't afford to take him to the vets to get his nails trimmed so any advice would be much appreciated. Xx

Sorry Charley, I've trimmed lots of different types of animals' feet but never a bunny

I always let mine run around on the patio, which kept their nails shorter than just running around on the grass. But I never tried to cut them. Sorry Charley  ::)

Thanks xx

He used to be outside all the time but since we got the dog he is too scared to come out. I think he is a bit stressed out so I am trying to persuade mum and dad to let me keep him in the indoor cage in my bedroom for a little while. I found some videos online about nail cutting so maybe I will try those tomorrow xx

Hiyas Charley...never had a bunny but have trimmed dog nails.  Thing is, you need  to be careful you don't cut them to short otherwise he will feel the pain.  Plus you might find the nails very tough to cut.  What were you going to use to trim them?  Poor wee bunny does sound stressed... hope your parents allow the bedroom option

Thanks Cat xx

We have special rodent claw trimming scissors from pet at home. Our guinea pigs are quite lazy and don't do much running around so their nails need cutting often. I can do theirs though because the like sitting on peoples laps and they are a lot smaller.

I have had bunnies and I love them so much. My hubby always cut the claws while I held him - he just says to avoid any veins you see in the claws and not cut too short, plus you will need strong cutters.  My last bunny was so soft that he just lay in my arms while his claws were trimmed and dozed off. If you feel at all uncomfortable then take him/her to vets. All the best.

Thanks Zaf and Catlover xx

I tried but he has such thick nails and he really didn't want to sit there. I couldn't see the vein either because his nails are dark. Mum said she is going to phone the vets and ask how much it is to get them trimmed xx

It would probably be a good idea Charley, at our surgery its possible to get an appointment with a veterinary nurse to clip nails and its a bit cheaper xx

Hi Charley, I am sure you are making the best decision taking him to the vets - they are such beautiful loving animals aren't they x

Glad your bunny is going to the vets as I love rabbits.  I wont have one though because my cat would be a torment and my dogs love rabbits so much they would want to play with it.
