Title: Looking for contributors to a BBC3 documentary
Post by: ronachanfilms on July 13, 2012, 10:23:05 AM
Hello all,

I’m a documentary filmmaker currently working with Ronachan Films in London, UK. We make documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4 and have a strong track record in making films on difficult subjects that require a sensitive and genuine approach. We're developing a new documentary for BBC3 about the ways in which young people are reaching out and supporting each other with their mental health issues online. If you're UK-based, aged 15-25, and feel that an online community has helped you with your mental health issues, or if you’ve made an important friend online who is helping you to recover, then it would be great to hear from you. Please email me at [redacted]. If you do get in touch, our conversation will be treated in confidence and there’ll be absolutely no commitment to being involved.

Many thanks.

UPDATE 13.08.2012 - Hi again guys, thank you so much for all your help. We've now found all the contributors we need for the moment, so I'm going to close this thread soon. I'll post another update if and when this project goes out on TV. Take care everyone.

Im too old also, but many here have suffered from depression from a younger age (in the group you speak of) and now find comfort in forums that were not there when they first battled with their depression. Im sure I speak for most of us when i say I could really have benefitted from this support when the disease was 'new' and scary to me in my younger days.

Im happy to contribute if thats an angle you would be interested in.

Thanks for all the replies. I do wish age wasn't an issue (at the very least it would make my job a lot easier)! But that's BBC3 for you...

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions for any mental health forums that younger people might be using?

There are quite a few younger people that use this forum, they're just not usually around during the day. Hopefully they'll be in touch with you later, although I think that they suffer with the stigma of mental illness an awful lot, especially the attitude of their families towards it

I'm within the age range and think the documentary sounds very interesting but the idea of taking part sounds like hell. I really hope you find people that will contribute and help.

Its great that this is being done to obviously try and raise awareness. It is a shame however that it is concentrated on an age group which is relatively young. When i was at rock bottom earlier this year there was a tv fundraiser on, one of the big ones like sport relief. They had a part on mental health and it started with a premiership goal keeper. Great i said to my wife. There going to show "normal" people suffer. Then it was all about a group of unfortunate men who had clear mental health issues. Hopefully i wont offend but these guys were stereo typical fruit cakes. The type of people who the general uneducated would cross the road to avoid.  I was aghast. The feature probably just enforced the perception of mental health sufferers.  Mental health will never be acceptable in this country until it can be seen you don't have to be outwardly effected to suffer.
BBC4 have had some great programmes on recently. One was about broken brains and showed the effect on people who have had terrible accidents or strokes etc. Depression was mentioned briefly but was seen as a consequence of their situation. It needs a programme to show people like us normal people (if there is such a thing) or rather in the uneducated eyes of the general public what people perceive as normal. Builders, house wife's, teachers, police men, insurance brokers. People who have not suffered any obvious trauma and can to a degree live a seemingly normal life or at least give the perception to others we do. Everyone ( not 1 in 3) as i have discovered has black thoughts who they never tell anyone until you show or reveal your own issues, but, only ever when its one on one unless alcohol is involved.  Ive had profound conversations with all sorts of people who are seemingly indestructible. It is however very interesting that next time you see them they avoid any such self imperfections like the  plague and will talk about anything other then look you in the eye and ask "how are you at the moment? ". There was an add on the tv a while ago showing a guy returning to work following a bout of mental health illness. They were promoting "just ask" and showed what people imagine could be the result of the simple "how are you" with the guy exploding or breaking down etc. Friends and family seem to be the biggest culprits at not doing this. I saw my sister for the first time in 6 months and she knows what is going on with me through text msg from me at the beginning but has had no contact since. She lives 6 miles away. I visited last week and not once asked how i was but we spoke about everything else.  I suppose that is unfair to a degree as unless you are that way inclined to really really care about others, people don't truly understand. So thats why we can come on here and rant or whisper how we feel as we know someone listens,  as lets face it, that is what sometimes all we need.

I agree too. Very well put. We are 'normal' people but we suffer from depression. There is still such a stigma to that word. S x x x.

Darn it too young :/ but i can see how this might help give a normal perception to the public and help raise awareness, especially amongst young people who feel they have no one to reach out to. Hope everything goes well. :)

How old are you CatAndMouse? The age range is relatively flexible...

To others lamenting the restriction of contributors to this documentary to the younger generation - I completely agree with you. I believe mental health has to be brought into the public consciousness by the media in order to end its stigmatisation. Unfortunately this is a programme that has been chosen for BBC3 - a channel aimed at a young demographic with a focus on that demographic as a result. I do wish it wasn't so.

Thanks so much for all of your lovely replies.

Hopefully whoever has allowed this thread to remain on the forum has validated it is genuine because it is seeking to privately message young children. Especially valid since an active paedophile was found to be using the site.

It probably is real, and unfortuantly I am too old and mad to contribute.

Lots of us on here help the younger people on here too. Would that be a way that we "older" ones can get involved in this? Thanks for your supportive post by the way, it's nice to see

This film is strictly about youth peer-to-peer online support and I'm afraid we can't really shift the focus. I'm so sorry!

I'm sorry I stopped getting alerts for this thread about the 14th July.  Nobody has raised any concerns privately with me and I have done google searches as well as checked out the website.  I'm satisfied but if anybody does want me to get in touch with Jamie let me know and I will do it  $%$
