i find that when its sunny even if wake up in bad mood or real down i can lift out of depression after a few days not weeks as in winter time. in uk seems we have such a short summer and even that has rain then from sept its slow countdown to winter and shorter days with dark afternoons etc (wish they didnt move the clocks as going dark at 4pm from oct real annoying!!!) any way back to the point 8-) just find that summer so short n rest eg autumn n winter so long n drawn out and even tho that not main cause of depression it makes it drag out lot longer than why sun is out. what countries have more summer and sun more of the year than other places????
-
I suffer from SAD as well as 'normal' depression, I did a bit of reading on it some years go and apparently people that live in very hot/sunny countries suffer from it too, the researchers have put it down to them staying indoors to take advantage of he air conditioning and not being out in the sun much. I've also read that lack of vitamin D has similar effects
-
guess increasing global warming will mean more having to stay near air con indoors as well, guess the thought of more sun more attractive than the reality 8-)
-
I think that will depend where we live, the latest I heard about climate change was Britain would get much colder in the inter and wetter in the summer months :(
-
Wetter is the summer months is certainly sounding familiar Zaf! ::)
-
It certainly is this summer munchroom
Z xx

Winter affects me badly. It is winter at the moment and I am struggling a bit to be honest.
-
Have you tried any of the light therapies Steve?
-
No I haven't. I perhaps should.
-
I dont think it works for everyone but it does help me, I'm planning to take vitamin D this autumn and winter too xx
-
In my country Bangladesh summer are longer, almost 9 months summer here. Whether, nature every-things are fine here, but life expectancy is very low here.
-
I would say vit D is a good idea zaf....I might try that myself.
When you think about it, if we are depressed etc and stay indoors a lot (as I do) perhaps vit D would be a good supplement all year round....eh?
For me, winters are bad and I usually hibernate, wrapped in my crazy mental health, but as soon as the clock changes back to spring again, my mood improves and I usually embark on constructive things to improve my "mentalness"
-
It might be if we dont go out very much but I believe its possible to overdose on vit D so its probably worth checking that out.
My worst months are January and February and in a normal spring I'm beginning to feel better by the end of March but this year not only was the weather unytpical but I had a flu like virus in April so the usual improvement was much delayed
-
I feel the same Zaf and this year my M.H sunk very low at the turn of spring, so it is not a very typical year all round.
-
The sunshine definitely does have a beneficial effect imo, personally I think anyone suffering from SAD should be sent somewhere warm and sunny (pref a south sea island or similar) between the end of November and beginning of April on the NHS
Oh, and Ive just seen a squadron of flying pigs go past my window ;) :D

I don't find myself too affected by the weather. I seem to get quite depressed when I go on holiday, which is quite strange and January has previously been a difficult month but that was back when I cared about Xmas; it always seemed such a detached time of the year. Now there's no real correlation.
-
When I first split from my ex and was made homeless I went to Italy for 5 weeks, it was winter. While the nights were cold out there, down to -2C, it was sunny during the day. I realised this helped my mood somewhat. As soon as I arrived back in UK in mid Jan. I got very depressed again, not so much the cold as the constant gloom. I dont think if its sunny my mood suddenly improves and I feel well and un-depressed but it certainly helps. So far we have a crap summer and its not helping. It was the one thing I was looking fowards to
-
I'm convinced the miserable summer this year is hindering my recovery :(
-
i know what u mean. when i went through my bad time earlier this year i had a few weeks off work just when i started medication and the weather was great. really made a big help. thing is now im fully prozaced it doesnt really bother me so much and i find it quite amusing hearing others go on about it. so is it state of mind or does it really effect us? i guess anyone is happier in the sun then the rain unless of course your living with draught caused famine or had a plane crash in the saharah!
.
-
It may be partly a state of mind but research has shown that in summer in the very hot parts of the US people also suffer from SAD and they attribute that to folks staying indoors out of the sunshine to take advantage of the air conditioning
-
hey guess what Zaf? Rain again here! I often think the reason for higher suicide rates in Northern countries ie England, Scotland and Scandanvian countries is due to long winters and lack of sun. I also wonder if thats why the is more alcoholism in those places too. I found in Italy people drank alot less than here.
-
Oh no :( Its brightened up here a bit but vey humid.
I think you're right about that, the shorter days and rubbish weather are most likely the cause
-
Brightened up here too. But I agree with what you said Mr Moody. X x
-
now the suns come out and its warm and muggy, whats going off Zaf?? I talk about the weather like a person from the Western Isles lol
