Hi everyone,
I just wondered if anyone knows paticular diet and way of eating that helps with depression? My diet is very poor and I know it is. I don't eat properly or the right foods, and I know that this must affect my mood and way I am feeling. I know I should eat 3 meals a day and have a balanced diet, but i tend to eat at wrong times, sometimes I don't eat at all, I binge eat sometimes as well and eat alot of biscuits, cakes, chocolate and sweets. If someone has any good recipes or diet plans on what to eat I would appreciate the advice.
Thanks
Danielle

I tend to eat more pasta, veg and fruit when I'm at my worst and it does help.

Thankyou Pip :)

I have to agree with Pip, I eat pasta, veggies and fruit. Chocolate and sweet stuff gives an instant hit but can make you feel worse after a bit. Its hard when depressed as we tend to eat comfort food, so I feel for you.

I tend to eat rubbish when I'm depressed, I know I shouldnt but as shaz says, its comfort food. Logically I suppose we should look for foods high in selenium

Sadly, I'm with Zaf on this one, it tends to be rubbish craved here to :-\

Fresh oily fish as much as possible to get the levels of essential fatty acids that your brain requires

I eat an abominable diet consisting mainly of toast with Lurpak, crisps, chocolate, pizza, chicken, coke, and the odd apple or banana, when I am depressed. I look at it as though the human body is a strong machine and in reality can take a lot of punishment. I drank cider nearly everyday for five years until recently yet my bloods always come back ok, and I smoke heavily. Not good, and I sometimes think I'll be lucky to see 50 yet when I am depressed I don't care. Yet there is no history of cancer, heart disease, at a young to middle age in both sides of my family; my mum used to say we our endowed with a 'special gene'. Rightly though not an excuse to abuse, but at the time I am living day to day and if I can just slightly reduce the angst I will do it. I have an addictive personality but strangely I can stop say alcohol or diazepam or stimulants cold turkey with no problems, yet I cannot stop smoking. I have tried so many times but it lures itself back into my life everytime. I really think nicotine is the most addictive drug out there.

Have you tried heroin?
What steps do you think you can take to improve your diet?
-
I haven't tried it, Steve. Was given morphine after an operation last year, but only once and have been prescribed co-codamol but that is the strongest. I would only take it if I was in hospital and in pain, but apart from that it doesn't interest me.

I always try to eat as healthy as possible... so lots of fresh food, meats, eggs, fish etc...
I tend to drink a lot of water as well.
Fruit and snacks like nuts etc are good for keeping your blood sugar levels stable... and this is the keys to having a good diet.
I do still have a "cheat" day every now and then, and I eat what and however much I want!
The way is see it... I have enough issues with myself never mind putting rubbish unhealthy food into my body as well....
>:D
-
I just cant find the energy or motivation to eat properly when I'm badly down :(
-
I do my shopping on line, so I only buy "good" stuff...
it gets delivered to my door, so no chance of me filling the trolly with rubbish...
Then, if there is only good stuff in the house, and I'm down....I can't eat any bad stuff...
I know not eating is not a good option, so no choice but to get some nice healthy food in me!
I don't have menus of local take aways or anything... plus, I know how much rubbish is put into these kinds of foods, so rarely want them anyway...
Back in the day before my troubles () I used to be a fighters (Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Krav Maga), I played football, climbed, snowborded etc, so I have always had a good diet and been fit and healthy... I find it better to continue what I know, 100% is good for me...
but, basically, as I said, if it's not in the house to eat, I can't eat it!
>:D

I could probably do that if I lived alone, I know what I should be eating but it takes effort which I dont have when badly down :(
-
If there's no rubbish in the house then I don't crave it, but I know that when I was at my lowest, I was incapable of cooking anything that remotely resembled healthy food. Plus I was given mirtazapine, which makes you crave junk food anyway. Not a good combination, glad I'm off it now

Beetzart, I tried loads of ways to give up smaoking and the only one that worked was e-cigs, which I still go through phases of using.
-
I gave up in the 80's when none of these nicotine replacement things were available - I used snuff which was disgusting but worked!

hi danni745
personally i try to eat as healthy as i can but there are times i want junk and i have it i just find when i'm really low its what i want and it will make me even worse if i can't have it but when i'm not so low i find it easier to have fruit ,veg, seeds and nuts etc so i think if you can try not to exist on it then with all the problems we all have there are worse things we could do by the way zaf i have sold some antique snuff boxes some with snuff left and i agree its horrible

It got me off cigarettes in lightening quick time!
-
worth using then !!!

Definitely and a lot cheaper than all those patches and gum you get these days :)
