Title: worried could do with reassurance
Post by: no-one-special on May 15, 2012, 06:54:27 PM
/been to see the doctor finally admitted that I am not taking on fluids apart from small sips over the last few days. She already has me on 40 mg of fluoxetine and receiving counselling but I am not improving. She is now referring me to a psychiatric specialist . I am not sure why or what to expect. Can any one trll me why this is happening ?

Sorry, I don't know why but I wanted you to know I'd read your post. If it's any comfort, I got more help after I'd seen the psychiatrist

how long you been doing both? maybe time to try another anti-depressant. anti-dp's are not the cure all they were once portrayed as back in the 90s. I think they help somewhat but never cure. I seem them as like a life-jacket, keep you afloat in a stormy sea but not quite the rescue your wishing and waiting for. Counselling can help but again, takes time. There is no cure-all or miracle cure, just patience and time.

thank you both for replying x

I have been on 2 types of anti D's this one since feb and counselling since March (I think). I am having problems getting work to acknowledge i have a recognised illness and there are not offering me any support other than offering to help me look for a different job !

Each time I have a meeting with work I come back feeling worse than before and I think thats where I am now.

Seeing a psychiatrist is nothing to worry about. Mine just talked to me, made me feel completely at ease and free to talk.

Take care xxx

your doing all you can do so dont beat yourself up. find the right anti-dp but dont think it will solve your depression, they just ease the symptoms.Your doing all the right things though

My dr referred me to the Mental Health team after he had tried several different anti-depressants and I was getting no better.  For me the psychiatrist was so good, he totally understood How I was suffering and put me on new meds which have worked.  I have also had very good counselling through MIND which helped me more than I could have hoped.

There is still so much ignorance about mental illness and I sympathise with you about work not offering the right kind of support.

Thank you its so reassuring to have people around who understand xx

I had to have blood tests today to see if I am dehydrated I promised the doctor I would drink and today I have drank 2 glasses of water. I know why I am doing this and I think I know it will stop when I get control back. But for now I will carry on carrying on and come to you all when I am unsure lol Thank you all again xx

Sorry to have replied sooner. I can see perfectly why your GP has referred you. You mentioned in an earlier post  on suicide that you had been in HDU on  a drip for dehydration. Your GP has referred you because they see your present situation as potentially life threatening and with anti-depressants and counselling they have exhausted their options, except psychiatric referral.

Like MrMoody I don’t see anti-depressants as a miracle either, though any psychiatrist is going to want to pursue them further. It could be that the type of counselling you are receiving isn’t the right style for you. GP’s are great for routine cases of depression, but psychiatrists see nothing but the really problematic cases all day. You are in safer hands with a psychiatrist.
