Title: Any advice please?
Post by: Beetzart on April 23, 2012, 06:12:48 PM
Any advice on how to get close relatives, ie parents, spouse to understand more about depression?  Everytime I try to talk to my mum about it she avoids eye-contact and changes the subject.  It is really frustrating!  All it needs them to do is google depression and just read the wikipedia article about it, well at least that would be a start.

Zaf posted a good link which explains so much and will helpfully help your relatives understand.

Have attached the link to this post.

This is the link Beetzart, unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to depression, also a lot of people dont know how to interact with us.

There is also a little book of the same name

Thank you so much for that :)

I am currently reading Curse of the Strong and things are starting to make sense, even after all these years!  As an aside, do either of you two work at all?  I ask because eventually I am going to have to find a suitable job one where I won't get bullied and two perhaps involves working alone or in a small team.  Things on that front look bleak but I'm not going to give it too much concern at present.

I know exactly how you feel, I have no family apart from my parents as we fell out with aunties and uncles etc. But my parents don't understand either. My mum shouted at me when the school phoned her to tell her that I was not well. She just doesn't understand at all and gets angry if I cry or get upset. I'm afraid I don't have any advice but I really feel for you as I know what its like xx

I have always worked, I did have 4 months off after my first breakdown and after that left jobs if I found them too stressful

I also have worked through this depression, I only work part time and also help hubby with his business.  I have had to take time off each time the depression hit for about a month each time.

Your empathy means a lot Icelolly  :)  This place is a lifeline as I don't know anyone in my life whom I can share experiences of depression with.

I agree, I honestly think that this place has helped me more than the meds
