Title: How many times have you heard these comments?
Post by: Beetzart on April 20, 2012, 05:59:46 PM

Quite a lot for me, especially the 'stop taking the meds' one.  I have also been called 'doctor obsessed', and the classic 'it's all in your head'.  Well technically that is right just like theirs is full of willfull ignorance, and I bet they wouldn't have the guts to say it to a person suffering from a brain tumour!

People seem to recoil, in my experience, when the word 'depression' gets mentioned.  They then show their disgust by saying those sorts are self-pitying, lazy, miserable bastards.  For crying out loud do you think we choose to be like this you thick cretins?

I've started reading a book called 'Depression, illness of the strong' by Dr Tim Cantopher.  Good so far I recommend it.

I agree people are scared of the word 'depression' , I also think people do not realise how b****y awful an illness it is, you get people saying they are depressed when they have just had an off day.  I always say I would not wish this on my worst enemy.

I agree, no one as any idea how awful this illness is unless they've suffered from it themselves and being told to buck up or similar is just about the worst thing to say to someone who's depressed.

The word depression either frightens people because they dont know how to interact with us, dont understand it, or are influenced by the old stigmas attached to mental illness.

Depression, Curse of the Strong?  If its the same one I found it very helpful

I know what you mean about short term memory, I find the worse my depression is the more i need to write lists to remember what I'm supposed to be doing :(

Yes I get these comments all the time :( the top one is definitely 'its all in your head' but I also get 'do you fancy your doctor or something?' Especially from all the stupid boys when I come into class late because I have been at an appointment.

Never heard that one before Icelolly about fancying your doctor, very cruel though and is one reason why I have a particular dislike for most humans.  I know that is prematurely judgemental but I figured the other day that the ratio of nice people to assholes I have met in my life must be at least 1:10, so I think the worst about someone, that is until if I ever got to know them better.  That is not to say that I am lovely by default, I can be very aloof and odd which I put down to incredible shyness so people think I am rude when really I am not in the slightest, so if they can judge why not me?
