Title: citalopram , reducing meds
Post by: afshapes on February 20, 2012, 12:09:21 PM
Hi , up until a month ago I was taking 40mg of citylopram but found that I was suffering serous fatigue in the morning and at night.  I experienced this on 50mg so came down to 40 mg and this made a massive difference to my energy levels and no adverse affect to my mood.  As I started to feel the same agian I decided to drop from 40mg to 30mg and again my energy levels went up and I lost some weight.   ;D.  However I did experience some side effects that I wasn't keen on, dizziness boardering on vertigo, and a general odd feeling, that seems to have subsided but Ive noticed that my mood is dropping slowly but surely and I'm feeling angry and have some very negative thoughts.  I think I need to go back to the doctors but I really don't want to go back up on the meds.  Is it time to consider different meds? I've been on these since 2009.  I work a tough job so I don't want anything to disrupt my day to day functioning.  Has anyone any advice or similar experiences ?
Thanks
Andrew

it might be worth seeing your doctor and see if he/she thinks a different type of antidepressant might work better for you.

I think it is definately worth going to see your dr to explain how you are feeling,  Citalopram stopped working for me last time I suffered, I was referred to the mental health team and the Pych dr changed me to Duloxetine, which I have started taking this time and it really helps me.  There are many different anti-depressants, from what I have learnt over time is that Citalopram or Cipralex are a common one to try first.

Update , went to the docs, waited an hour and a half , suffered three anxiety attacks and the when I saw the doctor he said there were no other meds that he could offer me and agreed to make an urgent referral to the psychiatry dept , oh and gave me some diazepam for the axiety , all in all disapointing

No wonder you are disappointed, I am surprised your dr didn't try a different anti-depressant.  Hopefully your referral will come quickly and you can get some help.

Interesting you should say that...because I started on citalopram in January and my anger levels have decreased.....but I'm suffering with extreme tiredness, mornings and evenings. I have also gained weight  :-\ and there is one embarrassing side effect that is unprintable! (but listed in contraindications. I'm trying to get a g.p appt, but easier said than done.  ::)
