Passing a model shop the other day i was strangely drawn to RC helicopter, bright yellow and about 12" long quite cute if you ask me, anyway went in and for the princely sum of £29.99 tucked it under the wife's arm and took it home, just before xmas, left it in the box while i studied it for a day then summoned up the energy to have a look,
well in no time i was charging and syncing the remote with the copter, i read everything and practiced as the booklet recommended anyway after 3 days i am flying round the living room into the dining room the study and even went up the stairs ;D that was about 3 weeks ago, its a quad blade 3 channel s107,
anyway passing the same model shop today i drifted in and drifted out with a right big MF of a copter 4 channel twin rota and to say the least it's a scary piece of hardware,
but i am for the first time in a long time actually interested and being reserved about it , taking my time this mother is a inside outside jobby and boy will it go the noise alone scares the &$%+e out of me, still got 10 fingers well 8 and two thumbs, everyone get one, if your immobile most of the time like me its a god send.
PS my 6 year old does stand it up for me when it fall overs, and after 6 mins of flying i am knackard,
LR pilot in training.
i'll get my wings one day.
-
Thats great LR :)
-
its brilliant that you've found a new interest
i have a very similar interest, i did a bit of flying but now im into scale off roading and a bit of drifting. i do miss the chopper though.
on the back of your 4 channel remote is there a little socket ? if so i would recommend that you get a lead to plug that into your computer and practice. its a lot cheaper to do that and crash then to repair your chopper.
they are bloody scary but for a reason there bloody dangerous, be careful with the big mf. i hope your wife didn't see the price of the big mf
im playing a lot with my losi mini truck, everything else i have is to big or fast for the house, well other than my big off roader, that thing can climb the sofa, get up the stairs and with all ive spent on it is so low geared and torquey that it ripped a rug up. i dont drive that one indoors any more :P
*edit
one big thing, get your self on youtube and watch a video on how to balance blades
another thing to add is does it have a fail safe ?? ie when it goes out of range it cuts out, not keeps flying normally straight up and bye bye :(
-
thanks for your advice and kind words of encouragement.
it isa little big for the house but for hovering and a few slight manovers, at the moment setting up the trim and ailerons and pitch it's all very different from the 3channel,
Cornish safety first yes it has a cut but it gives a warning on the remote first when your going out of range, the only connection on the back is for the buddy system with an experienced pilot dual control, i have contacted a local club and there looking at there access for disabled people,
at the moment i have trimmed the power right down so if i give it full throttle is only go's about 1mtr above the ground, but i did have a little moment when it decapataded the wif'se point settier plant ::) if it's very calm today i will have ago in the garden just hovering a little, i have the green light for full charge which should give better control and i have set it up in mode 2 which puts the adjustments on my good hand,
so up up and away here's hoping
LR

Its great to hear you feeling so enthusiastic :)
-
sounds all good then, is it nitro or electric ?? if its electric what type of batteries are you running ??
glad to hear its all safe and your setting it all up proper
i think the duel control socket is the same as a practice socket, but im not 100 % sure on that, will depend on the model of controller.
mode 2 is the normal way to fly
going to keep a close eye on this, if you can get some pics of them on here that would be awesome. i think im going to have to get some picks of my cars / trucks on here. going to have to see what flying stuff i still have, youve got me tempted to get back into it now
you say you decapitated a plant, i say your helping with the gardening :P
-
Hi Cornish bog standard Electric it the 4 channel GoshHawk i will get some pictures up of both of ours hopefully flying, my daughters good with you tube so i will ask her nicely to video it.
Barrert 7.4 volt 800mAh,
Torque 1.2 Kgf.cm
2 x high Performance 380 SH motors powered by a 11.1V 1500 mAh Lipo.
means nothing to me yet but by God it's a bugger to fly, it's a bit still today up hear so my go out later, need to get some hover time in to set up the trims and all that.
remember Cornish i am only 3-4 weeks into this so go easy on me. ;D and only got the bugger yesterday, but i have my sights set on a Blade SR 120 or somthing similar >:D
LR
i think i need to get higher as the downdraft is causing it to drift a little and i could be over compensating on the trimming i will see how it is later, it's very peicefull wear i live so a little noise will not go down well ::)
i have a wind sock on the washing line and i am painting a big red H on the patio
-
good choice for a beginner.
lipo batteries are brilliant just be careful with charging them. follow the instructions or they can go bang. its not very likely though.
im not brilliant with flying to be honest i was only into it for about 4 months then a big crash led to me giving up, only salvageable stuff was the electrics (just took a look under the stairs and all i have left is the radio gear) but that was because i didn't have a fail safe, it went bloody high, i couldn't see it anymore and then we saw it coming down in the next field rather quickly oops haha

this thread is hillarious! :D :D :D
I want one now...
-
go on lol do it, you know you want to. just start small and cheap
-
omg this is getting out of hand :D ;)
-
you want one too now dont you :P
-
YES YES I DO I REALLY REALLY WANT ONE AS IM JUST AS BAD AS YOU LOT :p
(sorry zaf, couldnt resist. cornish :P)
I have to confess I dont, there is an airplane in the garage I bought David for Christmas several years ago but he hardly used it, I dont have any inclination to either. And to be honest I dont think I'd hvae the coordination with those control things to actually keep one of them in the air!
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
bahahahaha sorry my dear.
-
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D thats the best laugh Ive had for ages ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D thank you
-
i had a feeling you would like it, glad it made you laugh
-
it did, I like your sense of humour :D
I honestly dont think Ive laughed like that for months and months ;D ;D
-
it can be a little twisted and abstract at time though
thats wonderful my dear, glad i could do that for you :D really made me feel better about my self knowing that, thank you
-
I have a strange sense of humour sometimes :)
Thats great, you've made us both feel better %$%
christ you wouldnt think I'm a touch typist with all those typos!
-
:D
suppose it is.
if it wasn't for spell checker every other word for me would be a typo :-[
-
Ive been a touch typist since the early 80's so I ought to be able to do it OK!
I wouldnt know where to start with anything electrical, we all have our own skills :)

Blar for the rain had a little fly this morning with the small one but a gust of breeze blew it into next doors garden and i had to ask for my helicopter back !!!, it was handed over and they glanced at the patio table table and spied the biggy sitting there, anyway the sock on the washing line dropped, green for go, the big bird took off i was trimming like mad but the bloody thing would not hover still, donned glasses re read the instructions took off again and for some unknown reason managed a full lap of my garden and a bit worryingly there garden and the other neighbors as well.
hell knows how i did it it was all over in a flash from take off to landing. our poodle was trying to attack it while it was in the air but as soon as it landed he shot off like a worried french ponce he is,
good job that throttles trimmed otherwise it would have been on the roof, next door popped the heads out to have a look and shot back in,
not only have they got a large helicopter flying around there garden, but it's operated by the guy they affectionately call psycho. ;D
-
that does sound fun :)
-
getting the initial set up is always the worst thing about them. occasional re trim and general maintenance and she will serve you well
if that was your first proper flight with the biggie outside then you did bloody well, there not easy to fly. well done mate i think you might just be a natural, question is how was the landing, i always found that interesting to say the least
love the dog description :)
i bet there loving you now then, the noise is enough to scare most people.
all you need to do is buy a huey chopper, get a bb cannon for it and play ride of the valkyries nice n load. haha

that's right about the set up a real pain, you have to be in the right frame to try it, luckily i am in methodical mood enough to drive my wife mad, i check and re check she has said that's she's taking the remote to work for her morning job just to be safe, you never know with me. the landing was a bit like cut power &$%+e it's falling push on and caught it just at the right moment almost on it's own cushion of air, it landed square on it's rubbers, i think i may invest in a Xcross take off and landing aid, sit's like a big cross under the undercarriage with 4 orange plastic balls on each corner, only 2 flights today that came to anything but i have the 3 channel to play with indoors ;D,
Have you seen the Tanks they look very well urm a bit boring but strangely alluring to me as they just trundling along, a kind of mellow moment in the world of RC, in fact there a RC for most moods,
Thanks for the + comments Cornish you are inspiring me />.
that does sound fun :)
Zaf get the small indoor one they do distract for a while and there so small and cute you tend to nurture them while flying around, in fact for me it's great therapy 6 mins max concentration or less if you want, i just keep it fully charged off the USB and off we go when i feel a black cloud approaching,
LR

I think the dogs would either be terrified or try to catch it :o
I'll leave the excitement to you guys but will love to hear the details of the next flight :)
-
that good that your methodical. the learning cross will take a lot of the beating out of your learning landings, they way i learnt to land was to put down 4 metal disks i made up at work with the centers marked and then have those lined up to the training balls, land as close as possible to havein them lined up, then take off and do a little manouver, mine was a figure of 8 around the bloody huge washing line pole and then land at 90 degrees to the take off and keep going round like that, make the flights inbetween a bit longer and more complex each time, try and include a stationary hover ever so often, just get the basics mastered. then change it up to a large disk with the H helecopter sign and be a bit geeky :P
sorry dont want to try and tell you what seems like stuff you already know
i brought a damaged tank and took the gun off that and attached it to my chopper. when it arrived from ebay i was in awe, just a shame nothing on it at all worked, got the gun going though :D.
i also made a small latch system from a servo moter from the tank that would hold a little bomb on the bottom of the chopper, ready for me to drop i did intend to make a little winch for the bottom of it too but never finished that project
from my limited play with the dead tank it did look like far too much fun, irresponsible fun :D the only things that seem tame rc wise are the sailing boats.
-
Well a nice controlled sort of lap of the living room and a figure of 8 ish that was more like a 6 you draw in reception class, landings are getting better, still buggering a little with the trimming, but i need height because of the downdraft, all in all a good days flying, and it even doesn't bother me when i get it wrong like i will try try again, but it's channeling this through the copter instead of pushing my body to it's limits.

Sounds good :)
