After having a discussion with my wife, I feel that I need to discover a new hobby or interest. When my father passed away back in 2007, I splashed some cash and bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle. I hadn't even passed my test prior to this! I suppose I am a fair weather rider, but maybe now I should join a club. It might be a great way to make new friends, who knows! Does anyone else have an interest or hobby that helps them to cope with their depression?
-
I love cake making. I started it as a hobby a few years ago to try to meet people in an evening class. It didnt work, but i found a very enjoyable hobby. Its still based very much within my family and friends at the moment, but would like to take it further in the future.
Good luck with your hobby Dobbie, i think a club would be a good idea and a good start to making some friends.
-
I have thought about an evening class, not sure that cake making would be for me, but it might be a good way to meet people. As for the bike I not looking to become a Hell Angel, just thought it might be a good way to meet new people. I read your other post and am sorry that you are not having a good evening. I know the feeling, my wife stormed out the other day to go to the cinema with some friends leaving me at home in a right mess.
-
Thanx Dobbie. The thing is, i am used to it now, part and parcel of my everyday life which isnt good.
You never know, cake making mite just be what your life has been missing...haha! Anything else you fancy in terms of evning classes.??
-
Uhmm not too sure really. Wouldn't mind learning a foreign language, always fancied Spanish for some reason. Photography would be good too, not short of ideas really. Just don't have the get up and go really.

Motivation is very hard to maintain when you are depressed. But stick at it, hopefully you can find some thing you will enjoy.
-
That's it, I just find it difficult to find the motivation. The more I think about it the more I realise that I have always been this way to a degree. I'm not saying that I have no motivation, I managed to get through college and uni and have even done post grad courses so I know I can do things, just find it difficult. Do you understand what I am trying to say? I just think that peole think I am boring because I don't involve myself.
-
Yeah i can totally understand what you are saying. I am similar. Went to college and uni, but mixing with people wasnt easy and i used to keep myself quite isolated. I am better now, but its still not easy.
-
It's nice to talk to someone who understands. My wife finds it very difficult. I think a lot of it is due to myself having a very horrible school experience. I hated school and was a bit of a loner. The teachers said that I wouldn't amount to much so I kind of gave up really. It wasn't until later on that I really put any effort into achieving something. Like you I find it difficult to mix with people. I think with me it's more of a trust issue.
-
the bike club sounds like a brilliant idea. im in a large land rover club and a few smaller 4x4 clubs and a local car club and ive made some brilliant friends though them.
im not really in touch with any of them at the moment due to my physical injures preventing any real off road fun :(
ive never really found mixing with people easier either but when you meet people with common interests then its a lot easier to talk to them and get to know them.
-
I went off roading once, had a great time! I always thought it might be an expensive hobby and I'm not really that mechanically minded to repair the damage I would cause!
-
yeah its brilliant fun and is fairly expensive and you need to be very mechanically minded to repair all the damage or just be bloody careful(even then you will have unavoidable damage) but i have to say a land rover is very easy to work on and to learn how to work on a vehicle, especially on the older ones as there so simple.
-
i have been advised to get a hobby i had a hobby before all the &$%+e happened it used to be photography.
have no interest in anything :(

Have you got the beard to go with it?
-
Ha, no I don't have the beard or any tats either. Maybe this could be a non starter already? To be honest I don't think I could cope with a beard!
-
I dont think a beard is mandatory, my OH is in the Triumph Owners Club and he doesnt have one - doesnt even wrar leathers these days either ;)
-
what just rides around in the nuddy??!! :o ;)
-
I like a beard on a man :)
I have found cake-making a great hobby aswell - I used to enjoy cooking before all of this (still do!) but had never even made a cake until just over a year ago... now I'm making them all the time! I'd love to open up a little cake and coffee shop... kind of mixed with a bookshop. Think lots of low lights and comfy chairs :)
I used to write a lot - but my depression has kind of ground that to a halt - the same with reading which is one of the hardest things of this I have had to deal with. I have started to draw though - very intricate drawings, I fnd its great therapy :)

Thank gawd for that! :D
I have to admit it conjured up quite a picture in my mind :o ;)

That's mesmorising Munchroom you have forfeited some tallents for a pretty awsome new one! It is a distressing and poignant immage, but it is beautiful and explanatory :)
-
Thanks Lol. I must admit, I'm quite proud of the clarity of what I tried to get across in that picture.
-
I'm not surprised :)
-
Munchroom...
What an amazing talent you have! I absolutely love what you have shown in that picture.
Its funny, cos cake making can make me feel stressed, the pressure of getting it just right, i am a bit of a perfectionist, but i also fidn it very rewarding. And even though i like the praise i get for what i do, i love seeing the looks on peoples faces at what i have done for them.
-
Well i could say my hobby is painting and writing. But thats more a job i dont get paid for.....I do
nanowrimo every year.
archery, i do love archery. The feeling of the twang and then thud as you take out the nearest rambler who just happened to have walked past... ;D
I write daft stories about my friends for my friends.
Gardening. I do love to garden.
Oh and i am sad because i make my own dolls house.
annoying people i suppose is a hobby.
-
Nothing sad in making a dolls house :)
Whats nanowrimo?

National Novel writing month. You need to write a 50 thousand word story in one month only...Hours of fun.
-
Wow, something I dont think I could do :o
-
well i have tried for some years but never got to the end. Of course I still have a lot of work before i could publish it. It just kinda flowed out this year after me and some online chums decided to do it. It was a right laugh. I averaged about 5000 words a day. so i did it pretty quick.
It was an achievement for me to finish it.
-
It sounds hard work, well done :)
-
I really wanted to do it this year but my writing has been badly affected by my depression and I can't seem to pick it back up - the same with reading, I sinply don't have the concentration span at the moment, which is so frustrating! I have started to draw instead though, so am finding some creative outlet at least! xx
-
Munchroom, I like your drawing. I like pictures like that.
My hobby at the moment is photography. Ive been at it five years ish, on and off, I am pretty rubbish at it.
-
As long as it gives you pleasure thats the main thing, I love drawing and painting but I'm pretty useless at it
-
I am a perfectionist. My photos arnt good enough and I wont be happy with them until they are. ::)
-
Well munchroom. My spelling was bloody awful. One of the reasons i didnt put it in for publification. See i cannot even spell xx ;D
-
I'd consider an art class, for absolute beginners. I suck at art, but I appreciate it and I wish I was good :/
-
My hobby is cars... I only have the one now, which is my daily car (thanks to the farmer giving my notice on the lockup!)
Can't wait for lighter nights as I'll be able to work on it afterwork.
Not got many other hobbies, but I do fix things for friends, anything hands on I'll try do.
Starting weight training tonight!
-
What kind of car is it?
-
Mk3 Ford fiesta.
Got a thing about rusty fords.
My current one is a little "chavvy" due to the paintwork, but I can overlook that by the fact it is near enough track prepped ready for a few trackdays this year :)
Also helping a friend build one up from nothing, which is fun.
-
I'm currently at college and last week they handed round some leaflets advertising leisure courses and they just had absolutely everything you could possibly think of and for such a small price, so maybe you could check out your local college for leisure courses and see if there's something to suit you there? :)
-
Doublep my son has a mkII Golf gti, which he is doing up and is planning to use it for track days again. Its his love lol.

My hobbies are;
Running-cross country mainly. Cycling and walking.
Cooking.
Baking-cakes.
Reading, current fave author Alexander McCall Smith.
Sorting wood for the wood-burner, sawing, chopping, making kindling, picking up any good looking bits I see if I'm in the woods.
Also...computer...which I try to limit. :)
Just realised all of these are very solitary!
