Title: Diazepam / Propranolol experiences
Post by: Flea on July 30, 2012, 02:12:47 PM
I had a medical a couple of weeks ago and the specialist suggested I approach my GP about taking propranolol for disabling anxiety.  I have tried diazepam in the past, but it doesn't touch me.

If you have had experiences of propranolol, please could you let me know whether it helped you and whether you had any side effects?

Many thanks.

Hi Flea.  Propranolol was prescribed for me years ago and just made me feel weak all day.  I didn't like it, and not good if I drove.  Not that it made me tired but just everything was an effort.

Ask about pregabalin.  You may have read my thread about it.

All the best

I have used propanolol and it worked for me with no side effects at all. I suggest that you try it before considering other drug options.

Is Propanolol an anti depressant?  Never heard of it

I've too much experience of prescribed Diazepam.  It is highly addictive, if used too often.  Unfortunately I developed an addiction 10yrs ago.  I try not to use it now.

Have a look at Beetzart's postings on Pregabalin, it's worth considering.  I'm also on Gabapentin.  It's used to treat epilepsy and nerve problems.  I find it chills me out a little.  Everyone reacts differently to drugs, so it's trial and error...

Good luck Flea   $%$

Hi Cat, propranolol is a beta blocker and is indicated for performance anxiety, but largely banned in most sports, but could help musicians or actors.  Although it's primary use is for heart conditions.

Flea, I asked my GP for it years ago, and he couldn't get the prescription in my hand quicker enough!  It's not addictive at all, and the dose for anxiety is moderate, plus it is a dirt cheap genetic so GPs would not mind using it, depending on the individual of course.  I nearly got given it for lithium tremors, but like I said before I really didn't get on with it.  At times I wanted to flay myself.  But that was me, but it worked for Steve so perhaps give it a try before something else.

All the best

Diazepam was a short term solution for me, whereas propanolol stopped my hand tremors altogether.

Propanolol doesn't make you "feel" anything as such, over a few days your anxiety will decrease, whereas diazepam you can feel hit you in 15 minutes or so.

It can cause issues with weight loss/gain though, so make sure you eat a healthy diet as you usually would and do not miss any meals.

Good luck with your treatment.
