Vitamin D
« on: March 26, 2012, 08:02:35 PM »
Hi All,

Ive been taking Citalopram for about 10 months. I thought I was doing ok but had a massive fall (in mental well being) 5 weeks ago. My Dr is fantastic and Im lucky that he takes my illness seriously so when i went to talk to him he gave me the option of increasing my dosage (only 20mg per day at mo and not keen on taking more if i don't need to - took nearly 5 years to take ADs in the first place) and/or having a blood test.

The test came back that I have a Vitamin D deficiency which is low enough to cause depressive symptoms. So now I'm on Horse tablets to help with that.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how treatment has worked out for them?

Many thanks

Hello and welcome,

No sorry have no experience of this, my blood tests that I have yearly have never shown that I have vitamin D deficiency.

I don't have any experience either, but lots of people on the forum feel better when they've been in the sunshine. Vit D is produced when we're exposed to sunlight, so maybe there is a link?

Thankyou for your replies.

I did wonder if it was connected to a form of SAD. I am outside for a fair amount of time due to my job, but its been pretty grey and grim the last few months down here.

I keep a number of reptiles and keep joking with my OH that I ought to sit under one of their UV lights for a little bit each day  :D

I suffer from SAD and started taking Vit D on dull days, I cant say if it helped or not as we've had a lot of sunny days since but I definitely find my mood increases when its sunny

I've never had it show up on blood tests that I'm low on vitamin D, but I decided to start taking it about 6 weeks ago to see if it helped.... Cant say I've noticed a real difference, but its probably not doing any harm xx
This too shall pass.
